i think to give a suspension for this would have been pretty bias, but it woud deffinitely have been deserved

What do you mean bias? If you mean his reputation played a role in the suspension then good. Your history as a player should be almost as important as the act itself. Look at Randy Jones' hit on Bergeron. Jones isn't perceived as a dirty, or even physical player and he only got what, 2 or 3 games? If its Simon, Tucker, Avery, Bertuzzi, etc. who make that hit, they get 5 or 6.

think about it, im a big leafs fan but even i know, if Blake had been the one to throw that punch, there wouldnt have been any to do about this at all. id even be surprised if it had gone to review. any suspension in this case would simply have been based on Downies history and the facet hes already thrown his fair share of cheap shots this year

You can speculate all you want about what would happen but the bottom line is, Downie did it. People expect that from him. Blake didn't do it, and I can't imagine that he ever would. That isn't the type of player that he is. But that is exactly the type of player Downie is showing that he is.

Blake may not be at Downie's level but he is hardly a saint himself. Heck, any guy that makes PJ Axelsson want to drop the gloves must be doing something a little iffy.

TSN "spin"

Downie fans

To me Downie is no different to Avery, younger yes but no different then wen Avery started...

amazing how retarded some people are

you watch, right now you calling me stupid but hes going to become exactly like Avery, right now Downie is in his doing push ups in the corner phase of it, in a couple of years, they will be calling him the spark that lights up his team...

Honestly you guys are being hypocritical, everyone tough Avery was going to be out of the league not to long ago but now super pest is a hero...

Blake is an annoying little shit to play against, sure. Still, I don't consider him a dirty player. I've never seen him do anything that I've considered dirty or even borderline, but that doesn't mean he hasn't.

One of the new "hip' guys on HNIC spoke up near the end of the first segment on Saturday and said Downie's not going to learn and it's only a matter of time until someone cleans his clock, hopefully that happens sooner then later.

Unless I missed something because the TV cameras weren't great at following the action, there really was no fight. Both players had dropped their gloves, but the sucker punch was the only punch thrown during the game. It blows my mind that a guy like Mike Richards, a guy who I have a lot of respect for, would sign up for 15 more years of this.

The TSN pics of the punch showed Blake's gloves were still on and he wasn't looking at Downie when he got nailed.

Let's see, Downie still gets to line up in his division against Brendan Witt, Sheldon Brookbank, Cam Jannsen, David Clarkson(no heavyweight but dropping the mitts on a regular basis), Ryan Hollweg, Colton Orr, Jarko Ruutu, and hello Georges Laroque. Ok, tough guy, give those guys your best shot. They will all be waiting for you. They are actually probably looking forward to your destruction.

Blake's going the other way. He turns to his left (Downie's on his right). Both Blake and the linesman go to the left, but stumble to their left as Downie pulls Blake's jersey and gets him where he can have a shot. I was discussing this on another board and another fan (not of Philly) insisted Blake should've skated away and Downie did nothing wrong.

He may lose to those guys, but he is a decent fighter who I think it crazy enough to continue this. I don't see a lesson being learned unless he is run out of the league.

Can't remember who it was, but I recall an anecdote where a certain NHL player was being a real prick, so this tough guys skates right up to him and goes, "I don't care if I get suspended tonight. I'm going to hurt you."

Downie will have this treatment coming to him.

maybe but that comes with the territory, as long as he does not get a Bertuzzy treatment, he'll be fine

If you don't mind, Mack...Just this to add:

I'm sure someone will try to defend that hit but I can't imagine how. Steen ducks and he still tries to launch himself into the hit. Hatcher's attempt to decapitate Steen was every bit as bad as some of the hits that earned suspensions for other guys and worse than a few of them.

I'm just glad he injured his own player...Karma's a bitch. Although that would have to happen 5 more times to pay back everything the Flyers have done this season

I think it would have been far more fitting if he had injured himself, especially considering that Lupul is one of the few non-meatheads on the team.

I'm opening this back up because of there is some new info to discuss, Please keep it on topic and less personal.

For Clarke, the rationale for Downie's actions was totally justified.

"Blake was a guy who had no problem going out and saying (Downie) should be suspended for life or suspended for the year," he explained, referring to Blake's reaction last September to the McAmmond incident. "When you say something that stupid, why shouldn't this kid go after him for it?"

I can't even begin to convey my utter disgust for this man.

Is it any wonder that team has players that are the way the are with that ass at the top of the heap.

For what it's worth, this quote should get a fine. It would have been a fine if it had come out at the time the suspension was announced and it should be one now. A significant fine.

What Downie did was, it looked like Colin Campbell took it personally, (thinking) 'I told these players they couldn't do that and he did so I'm going to get him.' To suspend him for 20 games is ridiculous

The NHL needs to start fining the way the NFL/NBA does. In the Association, if a coach or player speaks out against the League it is a substanial fine...in the NFL...late/cheap hits get big fines $15,000 or more, even if there is no suspension attached.

Fining a guy $2,500 is a joke.

His stupidity in defending Downie doesn´t surpirse me one bit.

A little quote from the 1972 Summit Series: Russia would have to play the game without their flashiest superstar in Valeri Kharlamov, who was sitting out this game with a badly bruised ankle thanks to the dastardly Bobby Clarke in Game 6. At the urging of Team Canada co-coach John Ferguson, Clarke wielded his stick in axe like fashion to chop down the flashy star. Clarke would later admit he had every intention of breaking the ankle he was aiming for.

That aside, Clarke was pretty much useless in recent years and only kept his job based on reputation. He was on a TSN show somewhen in December. I was watching and wondering if he had Alzheimer´s already. Last season the Flyers finally "let him" quasi step down.

Fines for players are limited by the CBA. Clarke should get $20k and the team should get $100k for this.
