Wheel bags

Recommended Posts

I have a credit at Hockeymonkey and need a new bag. I want to go with a wheel bag because I drag my stuff down a narrow staircase and a tight fitting garage and have been marking the crap out of the walls and dinging the wifes car! I have narrowed it down to the CCM 1062, Easton Stealth S9, and the Itech BG2600 wheel bags. Ideally would like something with skid bars or the like on the bottom. I did a search but didn't really find any good posts to help me out.

Thanks for any advice.

Where do you live? Depending on where you live/play, you might get a lot of heat for that wheel bag you are looking at buying from your buds around the rink :)

A lot of people around here in North Carolina use wheel bags. I don't even mind carrying the thing as long as I get it thru a few tight spots.

Just write Goodyear Eagle on the wheels and you'll be fine.

Don't worry, I'm in Minnesota but a Nascar fan too so I can joke about it!

No problem, I am not a native so I don't worry about the stereotypes !!!!

I am probably the worst offender in that regard B)

For airline travel, I would never want to have a regular bag. Wheels make it so much easier to get in and out of an airport terminal. But my home bag...no wheels of course! :)

Hell, I just need it to negotiate a couple of tight areas to and from my car. I'll carry the darn thing the rest of the way. So any endorsements on a good bag?

I don't have any experience with a wheeled bag, but I do own the Easton S5. It's equivalent with wheels is the S7 bag. The S5 has the best features of any bag that I have ever used. It has zip away covers on the top and one side to expose mesh to aid in airing out your gear. It also has a zip off bag the size of a small bookbag, I use this to hold my ref equipment so I don't have to lug in my entire hockey bag. It also has very tough nylon and oversized zippers and zipper pulls. I highly recommend the bag as it is also offered in a wheeled version. Hope it helps!!

The Shock Dr bag has 3 'skid' bars on bottom. It has wheels but no extendable steel handle....good if you will mostly carry the bag as no weight from handle.

If your going to wheel the bag across parking lot you'll want a bag with pull out handle....my 10 year olds hand gets sore so he carries the bag.

My bag for the MSH game was only 23 pounds and I had no problems carrying that though the airport here or in Detroit. Sticks on the other hand....

On the main topic, we sold a ton of the Itech 2600 bags and they held up pretty well. I think we only had one or two blowouts from overstuffing the bag. They seemed a bit small to me, expecially the skate pockets, but almost all of our sales were to kids.

Thanks for the advice, everyone !! I'll see what Hockeymonkey has between the Stealth bag and the RBK bag. I wear a size 8 skate but the Itech still concerns me with the small skate pockets. The credit was a Christmas gift so I want something I'll be happy with so the gift giver will be happy!

You would prbably be ok with an 8, 10 or more would likely be a problem though.

I too have a house with narrow staircases. I'll tell you this, wheel bags can be a major pain in the ass. First, they tend to be bigger, increasing the likelihood they will hit the walls. You can't toss them over your shoulder so either you're going to let the thing go bump-bump-bump down any stairs with its dirty wheels, or you're going to be stuck trying to hold a big, heavy, and long bag in front of you while you're going up or down stairs. Bulky and heavy bags aren't easily carried like that. Then the frame, handle, larger dimensions and dirty wheels make it far more likely that you will scuff your walls if the bag does make contact.

I bought a wheeled bag once and returned it after one just trip to the basement. Eventually I bought an Eagle bag which is shorter (but deeper) than the average bag, which means I can toss it over my shoulder without it bumping against the walls much at all. If I had even narrower halls I'd look at a backpack. I wouldn't want to wheel a bag that's been rolling around outside, through my house. If I had a garage, the bag would stay there.

We have narrow halls, stairs and tight turns to navigate to get to the basement.

The points on the retractable handle made earlier (was that zamboni? Hi zam!) are accurate... the bag is bigger, heavier and much more awkward to handle/carry because of it. Especially carrying in around tight corners... bars etc can GOUGE walls not just scrape 'em. Nuggy's points also fit with my experiences with the wheeled bags.

If you get a wheeled bag make sure the bottom is reinforced and has rubber, they seem to rip and rot over the bars. Whoever designs them doesn't seem to take weight distribution and balance into much consideration... can't use those skate pockets on most bags as they tip the bag over... making it much harder to use. Those are the main problems as I see it. Look for deeper and shorter bags rather than wider and longer.

For what it is worth, a fiercely committed wheel bag user, MissD had to switch to a non-wheeled team bag a year ago (within a month of my getting her a new wheeled bag.. dammit). At first, she complained loudly about not having wheels, but within a few times of using the bag, she loved it. It had handles on the end of the bag as well as the top... which is a GREAT feature. She found it much, much easier to navigate within the house... and easier to drag up and down the stairs. She won't go back to a wheeled bag. Her new team bag doesn't have handles on the end... a major complaint for her. I'm getting a repair shop to add handles to it... should make my life much more peaceful and hers a bit easier.

Seems like the only time the nonwheeled bag is a problem for her is when I park way, way, way in the back of the lot for those early morning games... so the long, cold walk will wake her up for the game!

Too bad you live so far Hockeydog... I'd give you this barely used wheelie bag to test drive through your house!

Hockeymom !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How the hell are ya :>)

Ya know I carry my regular bag by it's shoulder strap loop now to get down stairs. I should have looked for a bag with end straps. The RBK bag I went for has end handles, so I'll try it. Worst case I send it back too.

The MSH bags have the handles on the end and they have saved some damage to the walls at my house. I haven't had to repaint anything since I switched.

Hiya Hockeydog... been ages since we spoke (my bad).

I think you'll find the end straps MUCH more important than the wheels. I'm NEVER buying a bag without them again. I'm not familiar with the RBK bag... but if it has 2 skate pockets on the same side, the bag will not balance right. (unless... is beer lighter than skates???)

sheesh... Almost makes me think bag designers don't actually carry hockey bags...lmao.

That was the one nice thing about the Itech 2600, one skate pocket on each side. It's one of the few bags that looks like it was designed from the start as a wheel bag, as opposed to the bags with skate pockets on one side that appear to be converted carry bags.

That's one thing I love about the EWH bag(same design as MSH bag; SMI pro player bag), skate pockets on each side... I just wish it has an internal pocket and a U-shaped opening. Kinda tough getting the 10.5 skate in there, glad I went down a size and squeeze my toes in the 10.5... The 11.5 Tack was like hell getting in those pockets.

Nicely balanced bag, side to side and front to back. Makes maneuvering much easier.

Just a follow up in case anyone else is looking for a wheel bag;

I got the RBK 8K wheel bag. Good size with skate pockets on the ends and a big side pocket. It has nice big wheels and skid bars on the bottom. best part is it has side straps on both sides and a shoulder strap! It's not overly heavy so I can carry it when I don't need to roll it. other than the big side pocket it doesn't have other pockets/compartments, but I was looking for a basic bag since I don't take more than I need into a locker room.

I have the Easton S7 which was mentioned on the previous page and I can safely say that it rocks the 8k any day. Bigger bag throughout, free skate towel, external skate pockets, detachable bag (on the side) for valuables if you're without a lock at the rink, and the mesh thing to air out the equipment if you have to leave it in the car for longer than expected.

Skid bars are absent however, but the support reams are under the ballistic nylon.

I am extremely happy with the product and at 70CAD you can't beat that deal!
