were they made in Canada? I believe the retail versions are "designed in canada" which is pretty funny

disgusting that a top of the line skate is being made overseas

Who cares where it is made? The end product is what matters, and paying for domestic labor just adds to the final product cost. I guess it's "disgusting" that we use foreign materials, foreign oil, and foreign labor because some canadian needs the job instead? Great logic. If the manufacturing plant determines the quality of the skate, then I should want to import only Euro-made Graf skates because they have the expensive high-skilled laborers and new technology that would trump any other skate.

for one thing its an issue of tradition... as for your examples, foreign oil... not sure if you've checked recently but US oil reserves are not plentiful, Alaska can't be touched and a majority of oil reserves are in the middle east, not north america.

cost is not an issue, if it was the s15 wouldn't be at its price level. They are charging the same price on the skate as one made in North America where an employee is paid a fair wage and given benefits... not 15cents a day.

For the most part QC goes down when production gets outsourced. After my XXXXs and having to return a pair, then rejecting another before finding one that had straight holders and no space between the outsole(stitching was off)... I wish I had got customs just so I could get a canadian made skate.

if people really care that much about where their skates are made then they can pay the 60$ charge to get their skates made up in St. Jerome. but then again thats only for NBH.

I believe that most people would pay the extra $60.00/$100.00 for a better made or local made product. Just like paying for an extended warrenty. I know I would. I have stated that I would have paid anywhere from $50-$100 more for my S15's but because I didnt have to gives me more reason to support a company like Easton.

SRI is correct with the S17 going to $229.00 although I think it was a wise marketing idea to bring it in under the Overpriced Kronik with only a 30 day warrenty. People would have paid for it.

Easton I believe is one of those companies that remeber where they came from and who got them where they are. Correct me if I'm wrong but I havent heard of any other company doing a toy drive or anything like that in this industry.

Most of our oil actually comes from Canada, but that's beside the point...

How do you know what price Easton would be charging for the skates if they had used US labor? You don't. So stop spewing BS about something you have no knowledge of. The costs from materials, design and research, etc. for the skates could have easily dictated that they needed cheap foreign labor in order to get them on the market at the current price. Or maybe not. Still, it doesn't matter.

These skates are likely almost entirely machine-made, just like many products. Easton, like many other American companies, can build a factory over the border in Mexico...the labor to build the actual facility is probably cheaper, taxes and regulations might be more favorable than in the US, and of course the labor required to run it will save a lot of money. This doesn't mean that the factory or the quality of production is any different from a US factory that would be a bit farther north, but yet built to the same specifications. All that is happening is you have Mexicans running the machines and being payed much less than American workers.

If it's the principle of outsourcing labor that you're PO'd about, there are a lot better causes to take up than complaining about the outsourcing of labor used to make hockey gear, which is an insignificant portion of our outsourced labor. Go after companies like Ford who are outsourcing millions of dollars worth of US auto work. We can't stop outsourcing though...countries like Mexico and China have a great comparative advantage for manufactured goods thanks to their large supply of low-skilled labor.
