I don't bring in my iPod to the locker room, I'll listen to it on the way to the game, then I leave it in the car when I go into the rink.

You have asthma? Isn't that hard? There is a girl at my church that was on sponsorship for Michigan Tech but then they found out she had asthma and dropped the offer.

I have three different inhalers that I have to take. One I take everyday, the other two are fast acting inhalers. If I don't take the everyday one I can't even get up the stairs without wheezing.

I didn't know that I had asthma until I was at a training camp for National Kayaking and I had an attack on the water. Got rushed to the hospital. I can't remember anything about it.

You just have to be able to deal with it. My youngest brother has asthma and plays lacrosse. He has the same amount of inhalers and doesn't have a problem. Some other kids have asthma but it's not "cool" to take inhalers.

I have to have a humidifier in my room and I am prone to brochitis a lot more. I also have a nebulizer that I use when I get sick. It dries the mucus in my lungs.

I don't find it that bad to play hockey with asthma. I just have to work that much harder. Keep the shifts short and I know my limits.

I have a bag that has extra inhalers, my EPIpen, Electrolyte powder and skittles in case my blood sugar gets to low. My coaches keep in on the bench just in case.

I almost always play at 9:00 PM or later.

I play some Halo2 or Ghost Recon with my son before dropping him off at his mother's.

Eat a good dinner and relax.

I eat a peanut butter sandwich on whole grain right before I leave. It takes me 40 minutes to get to the rinks basically and I get there 30 mins before start.

I always listen to some fast, loud music in the car and it always ends with the same song.

I put on my gear in the same order everytime with the same shirt, at least what is left of it. I also do the same thing to warm up everytime.

Since most people are listening to some music. What are you playing?? I always play We Must Have Blood by the Dwarves as I am pulling up tp the rink.

-Eat a muffin and get well hydrated

-Get to the rink about 5:30 while listening to music and drinking beaver buzz

-Pre-game dump or pre-game leaks

-Change up, hit the ice, skate around, stretch and shoot

oh and if i have time i'll watch a hockey video or play nhl 06 or something.

Try to finish work at a decent time.

Have dinner with the wife and kid.  Eat whatever the wife makes.  Compliment her on how tasty it is regardless of what I think of it.

Give the kid a bath.

Put the kid to sleep.

Get to the rink 20 min before the game so I have time to get dressed and not miss the face off.

The rest of you guys must not have any kids!!  :(

And for all you that think I'm whipped cuz I'm doing all that with the kid, on the bright side I get to stay and watch the late league games with the team while drinking beer.  :)

LOL!

That's my routine.

Every once and a while I'll have a mid Sunday game so the kids can watch.

so the routine is preceeded by:

-Call Mother in Law so she can watch the younger 2 kids and the wife can watch the game in peace

-I also take some salt (I sweat like a banshee)

Pre-game dump... A must!

Those energy gel packages do any good?

I also have asthma. Luckily as I have gotten older its gotten under control to the point where I don't have to take daily meds anymore. I've gotten to where I only have about 1 attack per year. I do make sure to keep a rescue inhailer in my bag though. I fogot once and was almost hospital bound.

I used to have asthma as a kid, luckily I out grew it. theres always a few people with inhalers around the rinks. anyways, I usually try to drop a duece within a few hours before the game, I usually eat a meal about 3 hrs prior, get hydrated, and make sure I didn't leave any gear behind. for some reason I'm a really slow dresser, I can be the first or 2nd guy in the locker room and still manage to be the close to last guy out. some people just through their stuff on in like 5 mins, I dunno how they do it.

Awesome!

Very close to my routine, but I'm closer to getting to the rink 10 minutes before the game!

I remember the days of showing up an hour early for games... barely. ;)

most of us go to the pre-game penalty box because we eat alot of food a few hours before we play...and look at some of the stuff we heat...hi fiber, hi protein, high carbs...if that doesn't clog your innerds nothing will. But there is no better thing than feeling a few pounds lighter...LOL

I"m old (41) so I don't do anything to special...I might hurt myself pre-game. I have a big lunch, eat another meal/snack a few hours before the game and try to remeber to drink water during the day (usually forget). Spend some time with my son when I get home from work (been married to long to worry about spending time with my wife) and try to take a nap if it is a late game. Ride the exercylcle for about 10 minutes before I leave to the rink to make sure blood still flows to my legs. Get to the rink get dressed, skate a few minutes, fire a few shots then sit until the puck drops.

Yeah I take a Powergel before hockey and running in 5Ks as well. Get the tangerine flavor--has double caffeine in it. Red Bulls etc are not good--they don't give you sustained energy.

I used to eat chineese (lots of rice) about 3 hours before the game. I would warm-up before the offical warmups and take the time to make sure my gear was all set. My teammate always did the same but has a weak stomache. He would always toss his cookies on the bench about 1/2 way through the 1st period.

drinking any of the energy drinks are bad to do before a game. energy drinks have alot of caffine. Caffine is a dieretic (sp), which means that you dehydrate alot faster than normal.

Recent reports on caffeine causing dehydration show that the effects are minimal. Especially if you hydrate during the game with water. The Power Gels even say to take with water to help distribute/digest. And they are usable carbs where as energy drinks are all sugar.

Back when I was playing competitively:

- 4 hours pregame: Meal - Grilled chicken, pastas, marinara sauce

- 3 hours pregame: Read magazine

- 2.5 hours pregame: Dump

- 2 hours pregame: Get to rink, change from suit to sweats and sneakers, tape sticks, stick handle golf ball, go into training room and put heat packs on my hip flexors

- 1.5 hours pregame: Hop on stationary bike for 5 minutes, stretch

- 1 hour pregame: Get dressed, R to L

- 40 minutes pregame: Warmups

- 20 minutes pregame: Have trainer stretch my legs after warmup, go back to my stall, place towel over head and close eyes for 5 minutes, put top half of gear back on

- Game time: Play

Today:

- Go to rink, get dressed, play

Wow, I was really insane when I played seriously, the fact that I can remember all that is ridiculous

I play beer league now, so like any good beer leaguer my routine is to pretty much realize the game starts in 15 mins and I should leave, show up to the game 5 mins late, letting the first line get about 10 mins of icetime, then hop onto the ice middle of the first period and tape my stick on the bench between plays, getting it done in stages in between shifts.

When I played competitively I never had one of those intensive routines. I hate sitting stationary in full gear too early before the games, I get restless. I also find it hard to make my jock fit comfortably, so once I get it on I need to get out on the ice ASAP so I can forget about it. Show up, get dressed at a decent pace and then just get out on the ice and do my thang.

The only real rituals I've kept from my former competitive life are eating dinner *really* early, then subsisting on fruit until game time, and running stairs at the rink under the guise of looking for pucks in the stands. Used to be it was just an excuse to get a little warmth going and sharpen my eyes for picking up pucks through screens, but now it serves an even more vital purpose - making sure I have a few pucks for my five-minute warmups!
