Full cages - what do you use

Recommended Posts

Private rink requires a full face cage. I put NBH Oval clear vision 5500 on my 4500 helmet. Helmet XL, cage L (the largest). I have to bent down to see a foot away from my feet. Heads up old schooler, this cage almost makes me change the angle and length of my stick to see the puck. I have a longer face type. What cages do folks use or think I may need? Trying to avoid going to early goalie cages like Hasek used to use.

So what are you asking for? A longer cage? Have you tried modifying the chin cup to allow more movement?

One of the downsides to having a cage is reduced vision, you may need to just get used to wearing a cage and learn to look down a bit more.

The chin cup is as low as it goes, and it is more on the front of my chin then under, I would say a whole cm higher. Would love to find a longer cage if there is one. I am going to try the 4500 today.

I've never had an issue with vision w/cages. Used to rock the Jofa 480 on my old Nike helmet, but am now using the Itech Fantom(sp) I2 cage that came w/my Intake. Love the Fantom cage btw.

Negative, I only tried the NBH and they are all too short. 61 cm melon, i.e. XL helmet fully open. My LHS has Oakley half cage hlaf glass, and one old Itech half/half. I will need to check out the Itech models.

just grow some balls, ditch the birdcage and go play some puck. This is hockey men, lets remember that, if you think your to pretty to play then stay off the ice.

I guess you missed the whole "private rink requires a face mask" part that was mentioned.

What about those beer league cages that are like an updated Cooper HM30 cage with no chin?

Have you tried an Itech Concept full shield?

I have one...It works great for vision, but i find it is harder to get air as opposed to a cage....Does not fog up very often(without defogger)

The cup is on the bottom rung or just as low as it goes in the bars it came in?

I've seen guys take the chin cup and re-sew it on the bottom-most bars, redoing the straps as needed. Lower the J-clips on the side of the helmet to get the cage to get further out as well so the cup isn't brought too close as the bottom of the cage curves back toward the neck.

I've also seen guys cut the bars that curve toward the neck off. Then they push the cage out with the J clips, use the style of strap that just goes from the side to the ears, cut the chin cup out, keep the chin strap tight and use the cage like a giant perforated visor. I wouldn't say this is the solution for you, but there are lots of ingenious ways to get around sizing constraints.

Alright, there, tough guy - I'll loan you my goalie gear sans mask, and you have fun.

Read more, post less.

As far as cages, I will parrot others and recomend the 480 cage. It is long and has excellent visability.

yea sorry about that my man, i think youd love the old style jofa mask that was kind of bubbly. also looked similar to the cooper from the early ninetys. I have one if youd like. its white and in very good condition.

If you can find the right size (XL I assume), I'd suggest the Bauer 8500 cage. I've been using one for months and I think its great...it really doesn't infringe on your vision that much at all (for a cage anyway).

I have the lighter broomball/box lacrosse version of this and swear by it, like Osgood only 1/2 the weight. It has no chin cup, nice cat eye slots, still a little obstruction but nothing like a full cage. Only risk is a butt end through the cateyes but what can you do. There was a guy on ebay selling updated versions of these. Don't know if he's taking a break or lawyers got to him.

I think if you are going from having no cage at all, there would be little risk :D

I use a chrome Jofa FM480 on my 4500. I've used both black and white FM480s and chrome "disappears" the best from my vision.

Definitely check out the vision from a cage at an LHS before you purchase, because the visibility depends on face shape.
