Dislocated knee

I dislocated my knee in a tournament 2-weeks ago. Im just wondering how long it should take for the swelling to go down and how long to expect before i can walk. I can put pressure on it and have a decent range of motion..anyone experience something like this?

When my ACL was completely torn, my knee dislocated on a daily basis, further grinding down cartilage and meniscus. Do you have it back in place? If not, you have to wait until the fluid is displaced in order to twist it back in. If it is back in place, your range of motion is going to be greatly inhibited with that fluid in there. If you have had it back in place, and it hasn't been dislocated in two weeks, and IF you have been staying off of it and icing it regularly and the swelling still isn't down, you may need to get it drained. Also if you know anybody that has one of these, or even just the cooler and tubing (you can buy the knee cuff separately), they work wonders because of the pressure they exert around the knee cap.

P.S. best way I have found to pop knee back into socket is by putting all your weight on your good leg while leaning forward, putting your toes of the dislocated leg on the ground but back further (think lunging position), then straighten out leg while transferring weight to bad leg without touching heel to ground.

4-6 weeks. But be careful when you come back and you want to see a PT to learn how to tape it, its one of those injuries that make reoccuring injuries to the knee more common. I've dislocated my right knee literally 20+ times, including partial dislocations. My quad muscles normally just pull the patella back into place but it still hurts like all hell... These injuries ruined my baseball and football careers. Luckily hockey is easier on the knees, although I had to stop goaltending. :(

DON'T rush it. I dislocated my knee three years ago and was out four, almost five months. Couldn't walk for six weeks. I've done it three more times on the right knee, once on the left and tore my ACL. Knees are something you need, it's not worth it to rush it.

+1 on not rushing. had mine dislocate twice (no more thank god as I've never felt pain that intense)

barely walk for 2-3 weeks let alone skate or play hockey

also, I had a hard time with the braces found at Wal-Mart/drug stores as I have large thigh/calves and found even the XL's were too tight.

I feel ya there man, I got mine from the DR. They had to order them for me. My calves are 18" unflexed, thighs are 25-26"

Tough to find any brace that will fit. In fact xrays suck too, it always takes a couple times before they get it right. Most people don't have tree trucks as legs.

DonJoy makes a great brace, it's what I wear on my right knee. I just have a sleeve with the metal inserts for my left knee and definitely prefer the DonJoy.

DON'T rush it. I dislocated my knee three years ago and was out four, almost five months. Couldn't walk for six weeks. I've done it three more times on the right knee, once on the left and tore my ACL. Knees are something you need, it's not worth it to rush it.

you've dislocated your knees five times and torn your ACL and your still only 17? that's not good man. i'm 17 as well and i dislocated my shoulder last week. i don't want that to get to the point where it just pops out randomly.

I hate to thread jack, but since alot fo you guys seem to know about knee injuries, i figure I'll ask.

This is non hockey related, but 9 months ago i injured my knee (at my own wedding in fact) and it hasnt been the same since. I should have seen a doctor, but i was stuborn and didnt. Its my right knee, and under normal conditions it doesnt hurt at all. But once in a while if i catch my toes on something, and it jerks my toes to the right my knee feels as if it pops out of place or something .. and i have to kinda fool around with my leg till it feels like it goes back into place. I also still have some tenderness on the left side of this right knee... 9 months later.... Anyone have a clue on to what the problem may be? Im gonna get it checked out next time i need to go to the doctors.

Ive done it a few times. First, you need to get an MRI done to be sure you didnt tear anything. Next, it'll be probably a few months before you can skate. The first time you do it is the worst. After that, I hate to say it but it gets easier. The knee "learns" to go out after it happens once. If you want to prevent it, you are going to need physical therapy. And a sports surgeon taught me a different way to put it back. Just straighten the leg, grap the cap, and slide it over. A cap can only come out when the leg is straight. What happens is your knee cap shifted over while the knee was straight, and then you bent your leg and it stayed out because it couldnt go back. Anyway, here is the formula: Ice, stay off of it (get crutches), go to a good PT, find a good knee brace (only wear it for hockey though, you dont want the knee to get used to it and weaken.) A good knee brace will have what is called a patella stabilizer. These are not sold at Sportmart etc, you need to see a pro to find the right kind. Best of luck.

Brother I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and I am no doctor (but have taken advanced Human Anatomy and Physiology), but it sounds to me like you have ligament damage. As said above, you need an MRI to be sure, and you should try to get a referral to an Orthopedic doctor from your Primary Physician for that. The ligaments in your knee are made to prevent the heads of the bones from rolling over one another, or popping out of place. If one is stretched/partially torn/completely unfunctional, popping your knee out of place can happen. You may get lucky and it may be a sprain, but you may not be so lucky, as in my case, and it could be a complete tear. Knee ligaments are not a hard thing to tear, and it's a very common injury. Get it checked out though because every time you feel that you have to fool around with it to pop it back in place, you are grinding down cartilage and meniscus; and while the injury you have now may not require surgery, a repairing of meniscus and cartilage does require surgery. So stop wasting time and see a doctor. If it's just a sprain, you will probably need to do some Physical Therapy for a few weeks to build your core muscles in the upper leg area to prevent rolling out of place. In the process, your sprain/tear may heal. Just to note, even a partial tear of the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) never heals, and only worsens. The MCL (medial collateral ligament) and other middle knee ligaments can sometimes heal on their own because they aren't under as much constant stress as the ACL.

Sounds like you stretched the ligaments so far that the things just pops out whenever. Ill bet that if you tried to play sports etc it would come right out. If you ever want to be active again, see a good orthopedic surgeon.

wow, none of that sounds very good :( ... being about 9 months from the accident, its probaly to late for a doctor to do anything for me besides most likely surgery heh??? Im really not wanted to have surgery... Im deathly afraid of the knife! lol.

I was able to rollor skate on it at the end of the summer pretty well. Semi aggresive without it popping out... allthough it was a little sore afterwards. Going skiing is what is really scary to me at this point, because if afraid that if i catch an inside edge at the front of the ski, its going to twist it right out of place...

I know noone here is a doctor, but hearing opinions is nice beecause im sure theres lots of you that have been through similar injuries.... I think soon im going to go see the doc for the heck of it, even though ive been avoiding it at all costs.

Oh it'll happen. I can be walking from class to class and my knee will just give out on me and I'll stumble and almost fall. Other times it'll twist and pop out. Not fun. And yes, at 17 years old.

Same way when I was your age. Dislocated my right shoulder once by then and pulled a muscle in my back. By 19 I had a pinched nerve in my back and had muscle spasms in my back. It could be worse.

My knee is coming along pretty good....the swelling has went down a lot and i am able to walk around it. My one concern is it feels like there is a bone or something sticking out below the knee i dislocated. It sticks out on that leg but when i run my hand down the other it isnt there.

I don't mean to tack on, but the inside of my left knee, which I think is the MCL, is sore from getting back into inline. Whenever I move laterally, it is noticeable. It seems to gradually be healing after 10 days of not skating. Ice on it didn't much help but the heating pad works.

Any idea what this actually is?

Could be a pulled muscle. STRETCH, but do it carefully.

BTW, if it starts to become a problem you will need to qork out your quads and the inner thigh muscles. These muscles help hold the patella in place.
