Done like dinner 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2008 The 80's Oilers apparently began a tradition of dragging the Stanley cup around with them from hospital to watering hole to the 1st tee; wherever they felt like showing it off b/c they were the champs and the league didn't stop them. I lived in St. Albert, an Edmonton bedroom community of 45k during the Oiler's dynasty and a local pub called the "Bruin Inn" (ironically enough) became famous for hosting unplanned Cup parties. Mark Messier was from St. Albert and my mom had a professional relationship with his sister. The year the Oilers beat Boston 4 straight in the final (88 I'm pretty sure)I was 16 and we were all stoked about being in the centre of the hockey universe. I managed to fanangle my mom to find out from Messier's sister just which night he was going to bring the cup in to St. Albert, knowing the Bruin inn would be the scene of a serious party that night. Me and a friend arranged with a dishwasher in the kitchen to have him let us in the back door that night. It cost us big bucks each but we had heard about the one previous time "Mess" showed up with the Cup and didn't want to miss it. We had to hide in the coat room for an hour b/c we were afraid we'd be spotted as underaged kids and thrown out before Messier showed up. Well, he showed up, and he was already in the mode I'd say. Linesman was there, Semenko; guys who used to play for Edmonton and didn't anymore and people we didn't know. Lots of "edmonton hotties" too. Probably NHLers were there who I did't recognize w/o helmets on. Anyway as things got pretty insane pretty quickly. the whole bar was one big Stanley cup party and eventually we got what we had come for: A drink from the cup. It was awful (Pilsner w/ spit in it). It was glorious. I guess by touching the cup I jinxed my career. I guess that's why I never made the show. Yeah, that's it.

Hockeyman9621 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2008 My sisters fiance was in Pittsburgh for a Leafs game last year and he went to a bar near the Mellon after the game when a bunch of players showed up(Crosby included) and he asked Crosby for a picture because he didn't think anyone would believe him, but the bar wouldn't allow it because they were hosts to underage drinkers and didn't want that publicity... obviously. McDougalfaschnitzer 32 Report post Posted January 28, 2008 Jagr, Hollweg, Strudwick, Ortmeyer, and Jason Ward at Local across the street from the garden. I didn't realize at first I was sitting next to Jagr, but I didn't really bother him much. Just a raise of the glass and left him alone. I did shots with the other guys though. Jim A 4 Report post Posted January 29, 2008 1st off, I could never drink from the Cup the couple times I've been out with it, just doesn't feel right..My favorite guys to hang out and drink with were some of the key NYR from the 90's, great guys all of them, some good times..2nd place goes to some former Red Army guys who skated in our benefit game a few years ago, doing shots of vodka and then got called back to the rink for a bit, oof that was rough (30hr game)
