djosbun 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 As soon as Blue-Ray drops to around $250 i'll be picking one up. I just wish the Sony Blue-Ray players had the ability to play SACD (Super Audio CD) disks.
McCabe#1 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 I believe HD will win out. When Sony had Beta and were competing against VHS, everyone acknowledged that Beta was the better product. Sony would not produce pornographic material on Beta and VHS would; the reason VHS won out over Beta. Same thing right now, as it stands with the Porn industry. Sony will not allow Porn to be put on Blue ray disks and HD will. All porn will be created on HD DVD's. Who do you think will win out???

McCabe#1 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 Agreed there was no internet then, but the porn industry still sells hundred's of millions of DVD's every year. It's not like people only view there porn on the internet now, DVD sales are still through the roof. If you can only get them in HD DVD, I think it will have a huge effect on which product wins in the end.

I'm 24 and I honestly don't know a single person who has ever paid for it once. Blu-Ray has already beaten HD-DVD, it's over.
Spreedizzle 1 Report post Posted February 5, 2008 I understand that the pornographic industry is a large industry.....but do you honestly think that such a niche market would sway the entire debate (or masterdebate ;)) in the direction of HD? I understand that there is a lot of profit in that industry.....but not nearly enough to offset the sales of just one blockbuster.

fastbrother7 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 Its all a matter of time until almost everything media related is virtual anyways. Who are we kidding? lol I mean I still buy CD's, but people laugh at me because i do so lol. It will be the same with video once higher bandwidth downloads become cheaper and more available. Gwyren 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 While it was a failure do you all remember Divx? Something similkar may be coming for round 2.You're talking about Apple TV right? And I don't think DivX was the first of it's kind either, I believe it was Flexplay. Either way, it will fail, because just renting a movie is so much simpler.Apple TV is one step along the path, but not the final one. Owning physical media will eventually go away, I believe, to be replaced by downloading rentals.

Well, there could be you sitting at the computer at one end of the house, while your wife is reading in bed at another end of the house. There are occasions when one might not be glib enough to convince her to put down the book, but a picture is worth a thousand words, eh?

I understand that there is a lot of profit in that industry.....but not nearly enough to offset the sales of just one blockbuster. You underestimate that industry. Understandably, its effects are not something that is advertised, but porn has helped drive lots of industries, especially in their early days. Consumers of pornography have in many ways been at the vanguard in the early stages of technology adoption. Porn helped drive the videocassette industry, PC CD-ROM sales, and DVDs. Porn consumption consumes a disproportionate share of network bandwidth and was hugely important in getting the Internet into people's homes. Although I own a PS3 I know nothing of the relative merits of BD and HD-DVD. But if one offered a significant advantage as a pornographic medium, I wouldn't be surprised to see that advantage ultimately determining whatever format we end up with. Mainstream users would just take longer to adopt it.
Jordan6969 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 For movies I would have to say Blu ray because Warner Bros signed that contract as someone said before. To add to that the 6 out of 8 major US film studios are a part of blue ray.

Jason Harris 31 Report post Posted February 13, 2008 In addition to Best Buy, Netflix announced on Monday they will become exclusively Blu-Ray for the high def format; they will phase out their HD-DVD discs by the end of the year. I didn't realize this had already occurred, but the article said Blockbuster made a similar announcement over the summer. Now that I know I won't be sorry nine months later, there's no doubt I'll buy a Blu-Ray player but not at the current prices. Under $200 is the sweet spot for me. And I'm not going to worry about building anywhere near as large a collection as I did with DVD's. I have a lot of great movies gathering dust, some because I'm waiting for my daughters to be old enough to watch them, yet others end up not being the type of movie to watch over and over. Time is also a factor. I can either rewatch a movie or see something new. Considering new releases are available weekly and will be in Blu-Ray at Netflix, Blockbuster, Redbox and maybe even my library, I'm only going to buy occasionally. Rustyhole 1 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 once enough companies (hardware/retail) ditch HD-DVD and enough consumers buy a blueray capable player the porn industry will follow suit... and still sell tons of discs!
D aka speck 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 I believe that, visually, there is not enough to claim a "winner" in this ongoing saga. They both appear very similar. However, Blu Ray as a terminology in itself, is a MUCH better marketing campaign than HDDVD (however many letters they jumbled together to create that one LOL).On the other side... Microsoft has sworn it's allegience to HDDVD.I think Mr. Gates has enough coin to keep the format alive if he wants to.Not to mention the fact that you can currently get an HDDVD player for around $150, that makes it pretty tempting. Some time ago, there were thoughts on which burnable format would win... +R or -R.They're both still around. Also, I don't see the porn industry as being relevant to either formats survival.Does anyone REALLY want to see some of THOSE crotches in 1080p?
