How long is your working week?

Recommended Posts

I work either 48hrs. or 72hrs. depending on the week....

I work a 24on/48off schedule and get 4 days off every third week.

God bless the schedule of a fireman. Averages out to 56 hr work week, 24 hrs on 48 off. I don't have the benefit of a kelly unfortunately (extra day off every so many weeks to decrease the length of the average work week). Only problem is every 3rd week need to take vacation or trade part of a shift to play. Wife HATES me burning big chunks of vacation to play hockey, but thats what the Floridian gets for marrying a Canadian.

When I was running a shop it was 70+ hours per week and 90 minutes in travel every day. Right now I'm in the middle of a stretch of being on the road 8 out of 9 days. Then again after the 14th, I only work five days the rest of the month.

40 a week. Sometimes we're given a directive to work overtime during a crunch, but I usually ignore that. Why should I bust my ass for free just to make up the slack for someone else's screw up?

Thanks guys fore the responce. Its normal here to get overtime pay ore free fore work over 37 hrs. Also fore those on salary. But there are those on salary that dont its depend on your work and pay. Right now i have a ton of work and been working up to 71 hrs a week. But i still had a ski holiday last week. On the holiday ? How many weeks holiday do you guys have? We have the right to 6 weeks in a year. Thats the standard here some but some have a extra week. Not me :( .

I can't carry more than 6 weeks of vacation a year. But I do get personal time off (6 days). I never used to use it all but with the kids getting older we're planning on going on vacation more and more.

0, just quit my job. So basically just full time college student. Previously, it was 30+ hours a week on full commission and full time student... I'm soo much happier, for the time being. My nest egg will be gone soon enough. :(

Then it will be back to selling something and whatever warranties I can. Spiffs are awesome.

don't understand why someone would take a salary job @ 40hrs/wk and then work 20+ hrs for FREE. i'd never do that. you want me to work, you're paying me, my time is valuable and i'd really rather not be here. You want me here, cough it up or I'm staying home.

Because unless you work and live in a feudal system places will generally give you a raise if you take the salary. If given an option, I'd always stay non-exempt and get OT.

still doesn't explain working for FREE!

if my week is 40hrs. that's what it is. you expect more, then i expect more.

a raise only covers the hrs worked while getting paid, it never transfers to UNPAID FREE labor. i'm not saying one should be anal about it, most don't mind giving a bit more as they take pride in their work, but if i add 20+ hrs to a 40hr week, i mean c'mon... really?

that's saying your okay with giving them a free week of labor EVERY TWO WEEKS!!!

not me, not even close

Well i make around $60.000 a year plus overtime pay. Thats whats in my job. My brother inlaw makes $250.000 but no overtime pay thats his job. I would like his pay even if i work 10-15 hrs. more a week. Its that simple.

if i came to you and said: i have a job, it pays $30,000/yr. and you work 40 hrs a week. that'll avg to be 14.42/hr (assuming 52 weeks of pay) approx

now if that same $30,000/yr job reqires a 60hr/wk your only making roughly 9.62/hr for your effort. would you still take that job??

if my pay is fixed, i'll take the job requiring less hrs as it maximizes my earnings ratio

.

because if you have the right job you are compensated very well for it. I generally work 9-10 hours a day (some days more, some less), 5 days a week. If I want to leave early or come in late I can, holidays off, sick days, if I want 1-2-5-8 days off I schedule it...and I still get paid. I get a company vehicle that is paid for including gas and insurance. My health insurance is paid for, my cell phone is paid for. I get big bonuses at the end of the year.

Yes I have alot of responsibilities but the job compensates me well for it and I really like the place I work. Plus I am at the point in my life that it is not all about the money but if I am happy with what I'm doing.

^ he touched on some of the good points. Are you working for free on those extra hours? It seems like it, but there are times where you can have a day off or just skimp on a couple hours here and there and leave early. When a company is going to make a non-exempt employee exempt, they'll factor in what they would have made in OT and put that towards the new salary.

I like my job; can't stand most of the people in our dept. but the bennies are nice. 12 company-observed days off a year; just over six weeks of vacation and five personal days makes it nice.

I work between 40-50 hrs a week. Time & a half after 40 hours.

I'm considering a job where you work three twelve-hour days then four days off then the next week it's four twelve-hour days and three off.

In the CN yard here I work 40 hours a week with maybe 10 hours every check overtime. But If im on the road with the trains I've been gone on trips for 72 hours and had 100 hour work weeks.

I'm on salary, so I have to be there 40 hours a week, and I have to stay until things get done, so sometimes that can be 70 hours a week. Then coaching takes another 20 hours, then I have a house to take care of, and my family....an eighth day in the week would really help...

How do you like that schedule?

I'm on a 4/6 schedule. Four 24-hour shifts with a day off in-between and four days off, then four 24-hour shifts with a day off in-between and six days off. It still adds up to a 56 hour week and ten shifts a month. The fourth shift can be brutal, sometimes, but getting a six day makes it worth it.

No doubt...I like the 24/48 its not to bad to get used to...You work for a fire dept?

I do a straight 72 if I'm lucky, otherwise it gets broken up into 48 and a 24 or 2x12s.

I work in finance in NYC and the hours are brutal. Anywhere from 60-80 hours a week in the office and probably another 10-15 working at home. The reality is in these days of the blackberry and cell phone I'm basically always "on call".

I alternate 2 weeks 7am-330, 330pm-midnight Monday-Friday, its terrible to get into a good sleeping pattern because you switch every 2 weeks.

The weekend where I have to sleep early to get back to the morning shift is terrible as the last one I got to bed at 9pm but couldn't get to sleep til 1am and I couldn't get into a deep sleep once I got to sleep.

The higher seniority guys here get the 4 days on 4 days off(4x10h days) which I'm gunning for once a spot opens up and I get enough seniority as 2 days off a week is not enough! But compared to you guys, this sounds like a walk in the park.:D

60 hours at Unique Tool. Used to be 40 at Rite Aid. Hate both, but love the money these days. Also, someone on the first page mentioned that you only get overtime after 40 hours into a work week in Michigan... not true with all of our jobs.
