Ask a very stupid question.....

And get a very angry answer. I don't blame Jokinen one bit here...that reporter deserved to get smacked for that question, IMO.

Well, it's their "job" to provoke a response but there's gotta be boundaries and after what had happened 30 minutes earlier, that guy came off like a huge douchebag.

That's what I mean, you think he could at least word it rather than just, Uh how do you feel? Everyone could tell pretty much from the time of the incident how he must have felt.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. Out of everyone there Jokinen had to have felt the worst. I gotta give him credit for keeping his composure, for the most part. A lot of other players would have gone apeshit, I bet.

Even reporters should have more common sense than that. I understand he's just trying to do his job, but I would not have been as nice about as Jokinen. I woulda ripped that guy a new one.

i have a hard time hearing the reporter but i think he asks:

"how scary was that for you?"

it's not like he asked if he intended to injure him or something completely out of line.

JR what snus are you liking these days? i think nick & johnny is my favorite at the moment but it's only available in pouches now.

You're right...that's what the reporter asked.

That doesn't seem like a reporter trying to "provoke a response" to me. He asked Jokinen how he felt after the incident...about the most expected question possible. I disagree that most players would have gone "apeshit" on the reporter. I think most players and people in general would have responded w/o getting pissed off at the person asking the question.

I wonder what would have happened if it was one of Brian Burke's players who got cut and a reporter asked him that. They'd be taking his tape recorder out of his skull, that's what.

I dunno man....asking the guy who's skate inadvertently almost killed his teammate "how scary was that for you?" is severely messed up IMO. Not to mention Jokinen is the Captain of the team. Imagine how he feels.

My Dad was a cop for 34 years and only had to fire his gun once, and it was at a guy who was running away with a weapon in darkness. My Dad couldn't sleep well for a week because he didn't know if he had hit the guy. They never found the guy and in all probability my Dad probably missed, but the fact that he *could* of hit and killed the guy haunted him for a bit.

I think it all depends, we are all assuming as if we were in his shoes, and while i hope no one had or ever will have to experience this first hand, i think that would make the difference.

"How scary was that...?"

"How did you feel...?"

C'mon. At least ask something like..."Have you ever seen anything like that before..."? You're gonna get the same answer...without looking like a heartless prick.

"no, I haven't....it's scary. Thoughts are with our teammate...it's not about hockey right now..." all that stuff...

How about "How did it make you feel - the fact that it was YOUR skate blade that caused all of this?"

it definitely would've been interesting to see his reaction if he was asked that :o

I heard that "How did it make you feel?" was asked and that's what provoked him. I feel that it almost implies; "How did it make you feel - the fact that it was YOUR skate blade that caused all of this?"

Honestly, didn't click the link. My original post was based on what I heard about "How did it make you feel?"

I also think it was unwise for Jokinen to even take questions. He has nothing to explain to the press.

Don't the players get fined if they don't make themselves available to the media after a game?

I'm not sure but I would take the fine over putting myself in that situation. Imagine almost literally killing your teammate and having to watch them scrape up a LOT of his blood, THEN you have to go back and skate on that ice, not knowing if he died on the way to the hospital... how would you feel? Would you want to answer questions?

I'm a journalism major and one of the first lessons is to ask questions that can't be answered "yes" or "no" but instead force the subject to elaborate. IMO this is the shitty part of being a member of the media. It's hard to ask questions after tragic events w/o looking like an asshole.

The shitty part is asking him shortly after it happened. Those are valid types of questions 24 or more hours later, not while the guy's life is hanging in the balance.
