Actually from my understanding is that Hartford doesn't own the name, but the state does. Actually the Connecticut Development Authority. It was an agreement when Karmanos took the team and left that he would sign over trademarks to the CDA in exchange for him not paying back the state a hefty loan he took out. Apparantly in the late 90's when Karmanos changed the name of the Detroit Jr. Red Wings junior club to the Detroit Whalers (now Plymouth) the CDA filed an infringement lawsuit, but quickly dropped it. Although I tried, honestly not too hard, I can't dig up any info as to why the hell the CDA will not market the name, logo, etc.

I have heard similar accounts as well, kind of like when the Cleveland Browns moved, but when Cleveland got a new team it was still the Browns. I think the only way to find out for sure would be to either look up the trademark info, or talk to whomever handles the Vintage Jersey program at CCM/RBK. I have a ton of newspaper articles and special sections from the Courant the season they left. They are still in storage from my recent move, but when I dig down to them I'll se if there is any mention.

I'm intrigued now....Under the Freedom of Information Act you should be able to find out more. If you could purchase the rights you would make a mint off merchandising right? hmmmmmmm

I don't like seeing them too much because it then loses it's "different" appeal. Maybe on special occasions (rivalries, hockey day in canada, outdoor, holidays etc.) and like 4-6 times tops a season

I'm not sure Whalers merchandise is really in high demand.

Been looking for an authentic late yr Whalers jersey for a VERY LONG TIME.

I agree with habsfan, if you see the vintage stuff too much it'll lose it's "vintage" appeal. maybe a few times a year. I don't know if it'll work, but if they do an outdoor game between two original six teams, they should wear the old school sweaters. when they were really sweaters. Plus it would keep the players warm in the cold.

That would be awsome if say Bruins & Rangers in Fenway Park wearing old school sweaters, wearing brown gloves and using woodies. Now thats old time hockey.

what was their goal song?

"Brass Bonanza"

I have it on 45. The Red Sox started playing it at games the last few years. At first I thought I had enjoyed too many beers, but I heard it at another game, so it wasn't a dream....

Isn't the B-side audio of the huge fight they had with Minnesota in the WHA? I've heard it...Nick Fotiu throwin' hammers...

what was their goal song?

It was in the NHL video games whenever you played with the Whalers at home. They and STL (When the Blues Go Marching In) had their own signature goal songs.

Yes, the B-side is the Fight play by play. I'd listen to it, but i don't think I have anything to play it on... I may have it on cassete as well, I'll have to dig that up too.

Brass Bonanza is a great tune. Played it at my wedding reception.

Check 10college on ebay. He was their trainer back in the day. His prices are out of line but he may have a jersey. He has a shop near the rink I skate at on Fridays.

I've seen a few of his auctions- I think he finally dropped the price on his D&R John Cullen gloves from $400 to $200. Thanks for the heads up Darkstar.
