Chadd 916 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 Sounds like you need to see a doctor but this is not a place to get medical advice.
-brady2 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 I doubt it, earlier this season i took a hard knee to the thigh at full speed, both of us being quicker players in our league, and i couldn't walk on it for two days and it seized up instantly and was nothing more than a charliehorse
Tailboard Jockey 25 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 Go to a county hospital emergency room. They can't turn you away for not being able to pay.
usahockey22 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2008 It would be pretty hard to crack your femur, and if you did it then it would probably be too painful to walk on it at all, much less allow you to log on to a message board in order to ask questions about it...the thigh has a lot of muscle that helps protect against impact, and that is probably what is hurting. You should really go to a sports doctor...a certified athletic trainer could probably help you out (as far as deciding if you really need a doctor or not) without a large bill, but this still isn't really satisfactory. I would guess it's just a significant blow that was done to the muscle and will heal up if you can walk on it...but like was said, you need real medical attention if it's serious. cxo 0 Report post Posted February 29, 2008 Go to a county hospital emergency room. They can't turn you away for not being able to pay.No hospital can refuse you treatment if you don't have insurance or money. They can make you pay for it through a lifetime of small payments however. There's no reason not to go to a hospital for anything if you feel it's needed. lee92 2 Report post Posted February 29, 2008 While I agree a message board isn't the best way to get advice, all I can say is that I wouldn't bother going to the hospital. It sounds like a contusion, which should heal up in a few days. A contusion is simply bruising. You receive some form of blunt trauma to the tissue, the area hardens up as it swells and bleeds (bruises). If you did break your femur, I'm quite positive you'd know, as instead of slight pain and discomfort in walking, you wouldn't be able to walk all or bear any weight on that leg. Just apply ice and compression to the area while the knee is flexed as much as possible. This should control the swelling and bleeding. Try and stay off the leg as much as possible to speed up the healing.
nyrslr21 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2008 Your thigh can swell up to hold 30% of your blood volume, and a femur fracture can be fatal and usually results in the affected leg looking shorter due to all the gigantic thigh muscles tightening up. In sports, it's most often seen in football players taking a brutal tackle to the thigh.

I get to see that bullshit every shift.
foppa21 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2008 Tail- I wasn't talking about this case in particular, just the sentiment among the public of, "Oh, well let's go to the ER for anything and everything because they can't turn me away."I worked in a small town ED for a while and couldn't believe some of the crap that people would come in with. I'm sure you've seen the same research I have, that only about 20% of the cases that come into the ED are actually emergent. It's getting to be ridiculous, and I don't see it getting better any time soon.

We get 911 calls on a regular basis where the caller is waiting for us on the curb with a suitcase packed. Usually between 2 and 5 am. They've been feeling sick for 4 days, but don't call 911 until the middle of the night.
foppa21 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 What I hated the most was when people when fabricate stuff to justify to themself or whoever that they needed to come in. Just my luck, I managed to answer the phone on one shift to have a mother announce to me that she was bringing her child in because he had "a fever of 125 F." Furthermore, she demanded of me that there be a bed waiting for the kid when they got there. Imagine her surprise when the triage nurse got a temp of 100.5 and they had to wait along with everyone else!

As soon as she said that, I would of asked if he had already spontaneously combusted or not.
