Friendly reminder to tape your butt end in the shaft

Recommended Posts

Took a shot last night and I thought my shaft snapped by the top hand. I looked down and my wood butt end had pulled out. I went back to the bench, replaced it, and slammed it down to seat it. Then I couldn't pull it out. Taped it up to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Best part? The shot went in!

I had one break off on a shot, but I always add more glue to new ones as part of my "new stick ritual".

I always put a piece of stick tape over the tenon, with a little glue over it. I don't think I have ever had one that stayed tight. Worst feeling to when its loose. Can you ever notice it.

im really tall so i always put about a 4-5 inch knob into my sticks without cutting them down. i always have a hard time keeping it tight but ive found that putting a thin layer of tape over the part that goes in and then putting it in makes it much snugger.

EDIT: wow i realise how sexual that sounds...

I went through a period where I was breaking butt ends about once a month for most of a season. I'm not sure if there was a burr at the end of the shaft or what, but it seems to have solved itself. It was godawful annoying, though, going to poke check a guy, having him skate into the shaft and ending up with just a snapped-off butt end in my hand.

I wouldn't be able to use it if it wasn't glued/fitted properly into the shaft. That'd be like relying on a piece of tape to hold the blade to the shaft.

Thats all i use to hold my blades in.

If you don't mind.

Why? Don't you end up having blades flying everywhere?

I mean, you don't heat up the shaft and let it cool down on the blade? Or put a strip of tape on the tenon?

I couldn't imagine just putting the blade in cold and taping it on, it'd come flying out.

yea. apparently when you buy easton 2-piece shafts, they come with a wood plug right? yea. so i took mine out cuz i'm a short guy, and forgot to put a piece of tape over the open hole. funny thing is, minnesota hockey slaps your team with a 2 minute minor every time your stick butt is open...

Ever since that picture of the kid with the hole under his arm, I make sure to tape mine over several times. It'll still hurt, but it won't poke a hole.

I personally don't like a but end on my stick. I don't like the feel. My league, however, makes us use them, so I cut the tape in half, and make a very thin version!

I've never seen that picture, but after seeing people get gored by uncapped bicycle handlebars, I'll never leave the end of a shaft open.
