Dotes

Is it worth anything?

Recommended Posts

My little brother (12) just won a signed wood hockey stick from some raffle that mom put his name into. We were going to go play some street hockey and he didn't want to wreck his One50 stick, so he thought about playing with the one he won. I've heard people on here frown upon that, so I told him to wait and I'd ask on here if its just another stick or it has some extra value.

It is a CCM Vector 10.0 all wood stick with the number 19 and the name of the curve is S. Doan. He told me that the blade is signed by Shane who is one of the Phoenix Coyotes. So I looked at Phoenix's NHL page and duh there is a forward named Shane Doan #19 so its kinda obvious he signed his own stick here. The top has been taped and the blade has not been when he got it. It hasn't been played with.

Any suggestions would be appreciated of its value or what to do with it. Should he be displaying this or sell it? Its a senior flex so he shouldn't be using it anyway, but just making sure before he does something dumb.

You're not going to make any big money off of it and it would be dumb to use it I think. Just save it. Your brother might be big into sports memorabilia one day and wished he hadn't wrecked it.

Edit -

How do you not know who Shane Doan is?

He plays on the Coyotes and though I know of Doan, I'd be hard pressed to name five other players off them.

Gretzky! Oh, wait, nevermind. Does CuJo still play 'tendy?

To the original poster- It would be silly to use. He might be able to take it to a local sports memorabilia store and have it appraised or even sell it to buy a street hockey stick and some bubble gum.

Long story short- if he's just going to wreck it, at least see if it can be in the hands of a big Doan fan that will cherish it.

Top of my head:

Ballard, Boynton, Jovonovski, Mueller, Carcillo, Reinprecht, Vrbata, Winnik, Bryzgalov, Morris, Michalek..........well, that's all that comes to mind other than Doan. Sad statement about your team when most of the names a hockey fan can remember are your defensemen.

As of today you can add Kyle Turris to that list. He just signed an entry level contract and will be joining the team tonight in time for practice tomorrow.

Without a certificate of authenticity (assuming you don't have one), I wouldn't think that it is worth that much. You can try to get it appraised to see what it might be worth but you'll never see that value most likely. I'd just keep it and not use it just for the hell of it...

Panger, really no shock, put his foot in his mouth during Sunday's game when he said he knew that Maloney had made a significant offer to Turris. He later abridged his statement when he realized what he had said.

I think the key point here is that he won the stick, rather than getting it signed personally. IMO the stick would be worth displaying in your house if there was a story to go along with it, and if you had met Shane personally. Under the circumstances I might not use it, but it certainly would not mean a whole lot to me.

I met Bobby Orr in an airport a few years ago and I had him sign my stick. I am friends with his former D partner, Don Awrey, so I had him sign it as well. That stick means something to me and it has a pretty good story to go along with it so it's on the mantle.
