Headphones

Recommended Posts

So after three months, my stock Apple earbuds have failed me, and I'm on the market for some new headphones. I'm looking for an over-the-ear style (not another set of earbuds), something with good sound quality that can be used in pretty much any condition such as running, working out, or just simply listening to music that has solid durability.

Any ideas that won't break the bank (<$50)?

Thanks.

My dad is using a pair of Nike Skylons. He seems to like them.

My brother is using Sennheiser PMX 70's. He loves em.

Right now im rocking some V-Moda Vibe Duo's for my iPhone. I REALLY want to pull the trigger on some Custom Ultimate Ears...but im having trouble letting myself spend that much on some monitors.

With the prices, I'm signing on the Sennheisers as well. Though for running/working out I found some Skullcandy (ghey) earbuds on sale for $9 at FYE. They sounded better than the standard Apple and as good as any of the ~$40 earbuds.

+1 for Sennheisers if you're running in them.

For anything else, try on a pair of Grados. They make Rick Astley sound like Floyd.

I've had a pair of Sony headphones forever. They're like the Sennheiser set, except they're over the top, same in-the-ear style. They never come out and are nice and light for long-term active use. The frame can be twisted and bent like crazy without breaking. (This is all the Sony set, not the Senns)

I own a set of Sennheiser headphones with a mic, they are fantastic, though a bit pricey.

Out of your range but... I adore my bose in ears. Their sound is amazing and their support is amazing. I lost one earbud and they sent me a whole accessory set for free. Great sound, great comfort and I am able to use these in the gym.

I love the look of some of those custom ultimate ears.... so expensive though....

I use a cheap set of creative ear-canal style earbuds, fantastic value IMO. If your going to be using them for running just make sure that whatever you get will stay on well, on-the-ear and normal ear-buds will have more of a tendincy to fall off.

PS: don't forget to do some research, I have heard that the sennheiser sport line have a bad tendincy of cables fraying/splitting after not alot of use.

if you care about sound quality, +1 for Sennheiser. There are better sounding headphones, but Sennheiser gives excellent sound quality for the price. I'd advise against Bose, they tend to be pretty overpriced. Like bender said, do some research, read reviews and all that, and you'll be fine.

Bose is so overpriced it isn't funny. I love all of the audiophiles who lavish all the praise on Bose but couldn't tell the difference in a blind test.

I second Rustpot on the Sony's. I have the had the same pair for three years now, and they are just starting to die. Very light. I used them a ton as I am very active in running and biking.

Just reviving this thread cos I got a question.

I'm thinking on buying a new pair of skullcandy's online. I'm looking at a pair of Skullcandy Skullcrushers, anybody got a pair of have listened to them? They are exactly what I am looking for and I don't mind splashing on them because of the lifetime warranty they offer.

Also, because of needing a receipt to claim the lifetime warrenty, how would I claim this warranty if I brought them online?

Thanks guys.

You should be able to print off an online order form once you do go about ordering them, that should suffice. Either that or the enclosed packing slip when they actually do ship.

I am ordering off of an online auction site and not from a company, they are brand new though.

I had a look at the site and if I register the product online I should be ok.

A lot of companies will only warranty items bought from authorized dealers, or they have a specific serial number to register the product online that comes with new products. If the warranty is that important you might want to call the customer service line and inquire.

Apples are terrible. Im using a sony big bass in ear style headphone right now, had the same few for 3 years, there always in my ears too when im on the computer or around, held up great. They cost 39 and have amazing sound quality for the money, there also durable. Ive been through a pair a year and there great, thats only because i keep running them over or catching them in stuff.

Yeah, Sony has some nice stuff in that price range, and in several styles. I have a pair of earbuds that I really like. Not so hot on their customer service though, charged me $20 to have them fixed when a wire came loose in the earbud. Factory defect, but out of warranty. SOL.

Unless it's a rather expensive pair when it comes to something like that and it's out of warrenty you may as well pull out a soldering iron and do it yourself. If the cable is toast then just go pick up a really cheap pair and take the cable out of that to use.
