I'd stay away from Gateway. We bought one less than a year ago and its continually had problems and we've had to ship it back to Gateway. We also have a HP which is pretty nice.

I've never had a problem with a Toshiba laptop. Every company that I know that uses Toshibas notebooks has had very good luck with them. Every other brand has had somewhat mixed results. DOn't get a Thinkpad, no matter what you do.

Just this month I bought a new laptop for school, after extensive shopping online and a trip to Best Buy, from HP Shopping.com. I used an e-coupon code I found for a hundred bucks off on the HP site from this site, http://cheap.typepad.com/cheapster/compute...ware/index.html, and then a fifty dollar mail-in-rebate so that the computer cost me $898.

My HP Pavillion ze4800 came with:

Windows XP Home Edition

AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+ 2.133 GHz

15.0" TFT XGA (1024 x 768)

256MB DDR SDRAM (1x256MB)

60 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive

DVD/CDRW Combo Drive

ATI Mobility Radeon

54g Integrated Broadcom 802.11b/g Wireless LAN

Microsoft® Works/Money

8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Free Shipping

My brother gave me another 256MB of RAM he had for free and we already had a multi-licensed Microsoft Office 2003 Student and Teacher Edition, so that saved me another $250 . I am very satisfied with the computer so far, but if I had had more to spend I don't think I would have regretted getting a higher model then the ze4000 series.

No!!! Im tooooo late! 1100 you say?! You can get an iBook with that stack of cash. Plus with student discounts, you will end up playing about 800, 900 bucks. Plus, everybody knows, apples are best for music and pictures, not to mention being virus free!

For argument's sake I checked out Apple's laptops since our company has a rate with them and they lacked...power. Unless something doesn't convert right, they didn't seem worthy of the $1K price tags.

Damn, Vapor...

When she posted the thread, I was like "Be sure to specify that you DON'T want a Mac, b/c Vapor will try to persuade you to get one..."

:)

It doesn't convert right. Because of the RISC chipset, Mac's can run with less heat generated. If I needed a laptop just for music, pictures, and other multimedia, then I'd get a Mac because they run faster while using less power. Too bad I need a computer for more than just that.

I have yet to purchase a laptop. There aren't too many deals on rebates out there now so I figured that Labor Day weekend someone will have decent rebates to offer. Thanks guys for your input.

So it'll still play DVDs then, assuming it has a drive? If it only had games then I'd be set.
