Puck to the Side of the Head...

Recommended Posts

A week ago I went to open ice and was skating through the neutral zone when some kid shot a puck width-wise across the ice and hit me directly in the side of the head (say about an 1-1/2" above and slightly in front of my ear). It totally didn't see it coming at all as it came from outside my peripheral vision. Since it was open ice, I wasn't wearing a helmet and I noticed a bump pretty quickly. I put ice on it when I got home and the bump went down a bit. It's been a week and I still have a slight bump and it's still sore when pressure is put on it (it hurt to put my helmet on yesterday). Other than still having a sore bump I feel fine, so I don't think it's serious. How long does it usually take for a bump on the head to heal?

anything that has to do with your head I'd go straight to the doctor to get that checked out. Especially when it seems to be close to your temporal area .

I was at stick and puck as well and was just shooting around and went to fish my shit out of the goal and some kid shot one and I saw it bounce right off my shin, that was almost 1 month ago, and the bump/bruise is still on my shin. It is slowly getting smaller but it's taking a while.

Hope your bump goes down.

I took a slap shot to the ear piece of my helmet (I think). It may have been my bare ear, just below the ear piece. But it felt like I had water in my ear the whole weekend and had a severe head ache and couldn't turn my neck to the one side. So helmets don't always help but they're a good idea.

i've had similar things happen before, and I learned to wear shins at stick and puck. especially if you get a little half ice game going, it's nice to have them when someone bounces a pass off your shin

I had a bump on my shin for 2 years after taking a shot. That said I would defintly go see a doctor, You should not be just going on experiences of others, the head is nothing to mess with.

I had a bone bruise for 5 years on my ankle from a shot I took just over the edge of the boot. When it initially happened it swelled up to the size of a golf ball - no joke. It looked like I had a golf ball under my skin. Once I elevated it the swelling went way down but a small bump stayed there for the next 5 years.

Thanks, maybe I'll get it checked out. I figure the impact was somewhere around where the Temporal and Parietal bones meet.

ugh...

When I was 10 or so my brother spent a while convincing me to stay in net playing goalie with no pads because he would keep the puck on the ground. (roller hockey, w/ a ball).

First shot was a slapper right to the forehead.

He never got me to do that again :P

But yeah at open hockey once there was this kid who would jump off the bench at random when there is a full game going on, and just stickhandle along the boards with a spare puck and fire shots across ice when the play was in the other zone. I was the only one screaming at him, I don't know why nobody else would.

Two good stories from this topic!

edit: go to a doctor :D

Gotta wear a helmet bud. Obviously it's too late for that advice so I'd say see a dr. just to be safe. If you feel ok chances are you're fine but like others have said, the head is nothin to take a chance on. Good luck.

Some bone injuries can create calcium deposits that either A ) last several years or even, B ) never go away.

I would be more concerned about potental internal damage rather than the surface damage.

Odds are, you'll be fine. However, I'm no Dr. (as with the majority of MSH) so I can't make any promises.

If you feel faint, woozy or constantly tired (just to name a few) you should seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

Why would you not where a helmet in the fist place MacTavish!

I took a slap shot to the ear piece of my helmet (I think). It may have been my bare ear, just below the ear piece. But it felt like I had water in my ear the whole weekend and had a severe head ache and couldn't turn my neck to the one side. So helmets don't always help but they're a good idea.

If it was your bear ear, why are you saying helmets don't always work?

Because sometimes your helmet might not cover a certain part of your head. For example, at that time it was my lower ear.

I can't understand folks who go sans gear, even if it's an open skate. I just don't trust those around me, not even my friends. haha

ABSOLUTELY!!!!

Unless your name is Thor or Zeus...

you ARE NOT immortal.

Wear a damned bucket or suffer immeasurable laughter while you hobble around after your "accident".

I wear a helmet just to coach 6 to 12 year old beginners. Not a risk I'm willing to take.

I just looked at some pics I have of guys on my bench. What helmet are you wearing? Or are we talking ears like:
