Suggestions on a .22 riffle

Recommended Posts

I dont want anything great. Under 200 is the range. I want to buy one with a scope combo. I have heard nothing good about semis. I just want it to go to the range or plink some bottles. It would be nice to have when we go back packing for an extended length of time. I know just take a pistol. I was looking at savage combos.

It's a semi, but The Henry AR-7 will fit the bill for a plinker that you can backpack with. I think for just plain plinking where weight isn't a concern the 10/22 is tough to beat. Plenty of upgrades available as well. I love .22 plinking- it's a blast and the ammo is dirt cheap. I'm still trying to pick up a Ciener conversion for my AR.

i think walther makes a gun like the ar-7. What does a 10/22 run. Even when we take the guns out for a while we shoot the 22 pistols the most because they are dirt cheap to shoot. Im still looking for a longer barrel for my p22.

Ruger 10/22 is the common name among .22 rifles. Savage makes pretty darn good, affordable guns. .17HMR is another chamber that's becoming more popular, though the same platforms chambered in it are usually more expensive. I think it's got a higher muzzle velocity and accuracy at range, along with standard rifle points instead of the blunt .22 that's more common.

Don't get a scope with it, the stock combo ones are terribly inaccurate IMO. Standard rifle sights should do you just fine plinking out to 100 yards.

Check www.gunbroker.com <-ebay for guns

I'm still trying to find something cheap with diopter sights.

I was going to suggest the 10/22 as well. I know a bunch of people who had good luck with theirs and we had a good experience with our Ruger when I was a kid. I was actually thinking about picking one up because a 10/22 is way cheaper on ammo than a mini-14.

A 10/22 will run you around $170 ballpark. You can get scopes from places like www.natchez.com . I agree with the prior post- the combo ones are crap.

The 10/22 has been around forever because it is a great .22 rifle, accurate and reliable. They make alot of different attachments for it to customize it just about anyway you want (just go to Cabela's to see some of the stuff). IMHO one of the best .22's around.

17 HMR's are awsome but a little pricey to plink with in comparison to .22 ammo, I have a savage and a ruger the savage for the price is great, maybe a bolt action marlin would fit the bill. My 10/22 was great for years but is now starting to jam frequently, no more cheap ammo

If you are going to get a .22, get a magnum. A little extra but worth the money IMO. I have a Marlin .22mag, great little rifle. Cost $220.

I have a 10/22. Rock solid and lots of accessories available to make it unique.

Such as:

woof

-E

No way I could spend $13k on a full auto .22.

You can buy an M16 at that price and have way more fun.

For the OP, Id get a 10/22. Fun, cheap, good starter gun etc. Then Id buy a silencer and make it even that much more fun.

i've been looking to get a .22lr rifle right now too.

i've shot the ruger 10/22 recently, as well as the marlin model 60 (the two cheap 'go-to' semi-automatics, from what I hear) and ruger side by side about a year ago, before i was in the market. i'm leaning towards the marlin - i recall it felt a bit better to me, and they have a reputation for being more accurate out of the box.

other thing i was thinking about is dropping a bit more and getting a CZ 452 (bolt action). or a semi-auto .22 AND a 452 in .17

EDIT: only thing i dislike about the marlin is that it's tube-fed...

You get them shipped to a local gun store who is (and has to be) a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) and they will do an FFL transfer on the gun to you, probably for a nominal fee. Same thing with getting online purchased skates baked at your LHS. I've never heard of a gun store being shady enough to charge for transfer paperwork on a gun purchased in-store since there's no fee for the store except paper.

Inidividuals can ship firearms freely, but only FFL holders can make transfers and accept shipments.

Talk to a few local stores, ask them what they'd charge to do a transfer and if you use them, tell them ahead of time and speak to the owner/department manager to ensure they know what's coming, approximately when, etc. Don't be a douche and order a 10/22 and have it shipped to a gun store that sells them. Talk to your local stores about ordering them if they're not on the shelf as most will have an account with every manufacturer and local distribution centers that deal in multiple manufacturers. Typically, I've seen stores only do private transfers for used guns or charge an extra fee for a new gun you could have bought from them.

You can also find someone local and do a face-to-face transfer, which requires no paperwork as long as it's between two private parties for legally purchased and transferred firearms.

The only thing that you have to worry about is finding an instate local firearms dealer to do the transfer of the firearm to you.

I had a rifle shipped to a local gun store. They charged me $40.

The charge will vary from shop to shop. it ranges from $15-50 around here.

One thing to also keep in mind, if the seller resides in the same state as the buyer; seller can ship the rifle to without the need of any person having an FFL.

Have a Marlin too and have enjoyed plinking with it. It's been good especially for the price we paid.

I meant to correct my earlier post- the 10/22 will run about $189 or so currently (at least here in CT). For under $200 it's a great rifle. I say go for it and never look back. If you want any upgrade/custom parts, check out www.brownells.com .

bought a 10/22 today. Never going back to dicks sporting goods. No discount for the display model, terrible customer service, and it took an hour to buy a gun. Cant wait to shoot it tomorrow.

Don't you love how they escort you out of the store like you are a criminal and can't be trusted with a boxed firearm? Your experiance at Dick's is why I try to support the few local gun shops in my area whenever possible.

Make sure you strip, clean and lube before you shoot it for the first time. Buy a few different brands of ammo and you'll see which one your rifle likes the best. Have fun.
