New Jersey LHS

Recommended Posts

My LHS in upstate New York has a very limited selection, so when I travel on business to NJ (Jersey City) this week, I'm looking for a recommended LHS to visit. Looking for a new helmet, and maybe some new skates now that my leg is fully healed.

The pro shop at the Ice House in Hackensack.

Consignment has a lot of stuff, but they hire dopes. :P Pretty far from Jersey City too. (About 1.5 hours) Ice House is the way to go. 30 minutes tops.

Hackensack, NJ. On Main St. At least it used to be there about 18 years ago:)

Oh, I meant a pretty good store on Main (don't remember it's name) in Hackensack. But that was a long time ago.

You are thinking of Cowan's on Main Street. Birkenmeir's is a soccer specialty store on Main Street. They are still around. Cowan's went belly-up a year ago. I used to work at O'Shea Athletic Outfitters in River Edge. We had hockey covered at O'Shea.

Where upstate? There are quite a few places in NY, as well as some great LHSs in Mass as well. In this neck of the woods you have plenty of options.

Binghamton, NY. A bit west from where you are thinking. McKies in Syracuse is about 70 miles away north. Requires a special trip though. Stopping while on business is the way to go!

What about the hockey stop? Is that your LHS? Right off exit 6 on I-81. They are a tad pricey but I find them to be negotiable within reason. They carry a fair bit of top of the line gear, and are willing to custom order. Any bad experiences there?

Yes, that's the LHS. The Hockey Shop. Good Guys. The overall experience has been very good there. That is my usual shop, but selection is low at times. Just don't have the sales volume to justify the inventory. So, when I travel and can browse/shop at larger volume stores, it's a good time to try on and compare.

The Ice House in Hackensack has a good selection, but they're pretty pricey, IMO.

My local rink is Aspen Ice in Flemington, they have a pretty terrible selection.

I just order everything online nowadays.

Their sister shop in Randolph is pretty good. Decent selection, except when it comes to gloves. Seems like every pair is navy for the club team that plays out of the rink.

There is also Sports Plus in Whippany and a few other locations around the tri-state. You can find this particular store by looking up Ed K Ice Sports. Very good selection, but can be a bit pricey. It's not too expensive though, once you factor in shipping and the enjoyment of walking out of the store with new toy in hand.

I've been to that place. Really nice guys, but NO inventory. They will order anything you want, because most likely they won't have it in stock.

As for having the XXXX stick'um, well, EVERY shop has that in stock now. They just came out. The Ice House is slighty pricey, but the employees there really know their stuff. Peter can sit and talk shop for hours while fitting customers correctly and within their budget.

My best friend works at the Flemington shop, they hardly get anything they order, and they ship over a ton of stuff that Randolph can't sell.

The pro shop in red bank, NJ at the armory used to be really good, but its starting to come apart. The old guy can't sharpen for shit, avoid him, there are two kids that are pretty good, one shorter guy and the tall guy. Both are older, don't trust the younger kids. There used to be a guy there who was really good, but the old guy told me he went to college and is doing it for some d1 team now. figures, the one guy who really knows what hes doing. They're prices are at the high end of competitive, and if you order something, you'll never, ever, get it. Someone needs to buy the old guy (the manager) an organizer.
