Recommended Posts

my parents loved the historical/nostalgic part of rhode island and seeing all the places they remembered growing up

and i loved it because of the story it told of high school hockey, which has been thusfar the greatest experience of my life

anyone else from neweng seen the movie/any thoughts on it? i think itd be appreciated by any hockey player coast to coast

I haven't seen it.. is it primarily about Mt St. Charles?

I almost picked up the book "Pride On The Mount" last week. Looked like a great read. I had recently read "Ice Time" by Jay Atkinson and it was real good.

yeah the story revolves around the streak MSC had from 78-03, quite the amazing story, i actually just began reading "ice time" by atkinson, i suppose its more than worthwhile?

have you read travis roy's story "eleven seconds"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travis_Roy

I remember the Travis Roy story very well. I was just in the transition of going from roller to ice hockey and heard about that on ESPN the night after it happened. I never really thought too much about the possibility of being seriously injured until that happened and as a result I became much more aware of my playing habits on the ice and equipment I purchased.

Keep in mind just how small the state of Rhode Island is because, while the MSC run sounds great, there really isn't a truckload of competition in the state.

valid point, but think about how many players have gone on to nhl, minor pro, and ncaa careers after msc

True, they do a great job of bringing in talent. Now, tell me how many guys from the rest of Rhode Island high schools combined have gone that far.

I always loved when MSC would head into Mass to get their heads handed to them by CM.

As mentioned, the state of HS hockey in RI is not that impressive and anyone good in RI pretty much went there, so it was like the RI all-star team against the best of the rest. No shocker they had the run they did. Their coach was a clown of biblical proportions, too, which made it easy dislike them.

Off the top of my head, the only NHL player I can think of from RI that didn't go to MSC is Rob Gaudreau of Bishop Hendricken, who went on to Providence College and then had some productive seasons in the NHL. I'm sure there are more but probably not too many. Especially in recent memory, during the MSC "dominance" of the RI state tourney.

Speaking of Warwick, you guys know if RH at the old RIISC on Jefferson Blvd is still going strong? My old stomping grounds...

Lived 5 years in Providence and saw this doc on public access a few times. MSC would get beat by Super 8 teams from Boston, but they are legit. Actually I believe Hendricken is the new powerhouse. HS hockey in RI is pretty strong as far as support and the number of players, though.

And Tony, Pride on the Mount is great. As is Ice Time. Hell, I love any hockey book, even The Magic Stick.

I remember when Holy Angels Academy of Richfield, MN would go out east..they were ranked 22nd in the state at the time and tied Catholic Memorial this year and demolished the Rhode Island Team..They play there every year..Didnt make it to the state tourney this year, but still tough. I believe Catholic Memorial last beat them in 2002...but havent since....I could be wrong though..

Who really came out of RI?

I can only think of Keith Carney and Bryan Berard...not exactly shooting the lights out...

Yes, of major league baseball players from GTA. I would hope there are more hockey players from GTA in the NHL than little Rhode Island.
