Spreedizzle 1 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 I don't think that it is any secret that I am advocate for both hockey and cycling. The following is an article that was forwarded to me (Thank you Sabby) about a man that had fallen asleep at the wheel due to massive amounts of drugs and alcohol. Needless to say, his careless actions injured many and killed one.My point being that cyclists have every right to the road that a car does. Be respectful and do not endanger the lives of those around you that are enjoying their time on the road as a cyclist.Remember one thing.....in this country a drivers license is a priviledge and not a right. english15x 3 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 yikes! That's terrible. That picture is pretty horrific. I move around cyclist on the road but sometimes they feel they have to be in the way, like in the middle of country roads. Happened the other day, about 8 cyclists stopped at a stop sign in the middle of a road for a break and I couldn't pull out, and they wouldn't move. How is that sharing the road. xdcx 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 People who drink/take drugs and drive and put others peoples lifes at risk don't deserve to be alive themselves. That picture is horrible and you would hope even hearing about things like this would stop people from driving under the influence. So stupid, words can't even describe..... kovalchuk71 212 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 I agree, but I have read on several cycling forums about some bikers that like to get in the way of cars just to piss drivers off. I dont call that sharing the road.
RadioGaGa 162 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 I agree, but I have read on several cycling forums about some bikers that like to get in the way of cars just to piss drivers off. I dont call that sharing the road. It's a two way street (pun intended). If cyclists want driver to show respect to them, they have to do the same. Personally, If I have a cyclist on my right...and the left lane is open, I will move over a full lane to pass them...which I think is the way it is supposed to be anyways. Spreedizzle 1 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 I'll agree that there are a handful of bone heads out there in the cycling world, just like there are in hockey and every other sport. My point being that the vast majority of cyclists are not in taht category, and genuinely are out there for enjoyment, to ride, or train as a professional (I raced professionally for 3 years). From the age of 16-24 I typically logged 300-600 miles a week on a bike, on the roads training with my teammates and adhering to the rules of the road and being respectable to motorists.....I only posted this thread in attempt to have people reciprocate the respect and be weary before you punch the throttle to the floor while inches away from a cyclist. RadioGaGa 162 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 I absolutely HATE passing old people (who ride really, REALLY slow) and kids on bikes. I'm always worried that Gravity is going to play a factor in them ending up right in front of me.

At least 70% of the cyclists in this town do NOT follow traffic laws. My favorites are the ones who insist that the signal lights don't apply to them. Just this morning I nearly took a guy out because he pedaled right through a red light and HE flipped ME off.Point being, whether you're on two wheels or four, motor or no, follow the traffic laws. The majority of them can't be bothered with stopping at stop signs, and like to ride their bikes in the middle of the lane. The bike lane is there for a reason, and blowing through stop signs doesn't do much to win respect. pantherfan 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 I don't cycle much but I think it's people like me that give cyclists a bad name, I feel it is my right to act like a car when on my bike (cycle in the middle of the road) when it suits me and to act like a cyclist or pedestrian when it's gonna get me somewhere quicker. I especially enjoy crossings, red lights and generally traffic of any kind when I'm out for a pedal. The lower emissions aren't bad either but I feel the need to burn copious amounts of diesel in my backyard to replenish my manhood after a good cycle. On a semi-serious note, I don't think it's the everyday cyclists that act like jerks, it can be pretty dangerous on the roads for cyclists and cutting people up and running lights are gonna get you hurt if you do it everyday.RIP to the cyclist involved in this though, and a big screw you to the drunk behind the wheel! Cleophus 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 There is a lot of bicycling here in the Bay Area and drivers therefore seem to have awareness of and respect for cyclists (compared to what I've heard on bicycling.com's forums about other areas of the country where it's not uncommon for motorists to f*** with cyclists). That being said, I do notice a lot of 'entitlement' among cyclists here in SF in terms of violations of the rules of the road. TONS of stop-sign and red-light running, riding on the sidewalk, etc. Lots of complaining about their rights vis-a-vis cars, but no mention of how they endanger pedestrians and other cyclists by their illegal actions.I used to be an avid bicyclist and even joined the SF Bike Coalition for years, but as these types of cycling behaviors increased I have distanced myself from the cycling 'community' here in SF.ANYWAY, it goes without saying that bicyclists are very vulnerable while on the road, and this story and picutre make a grim example of that. Di Matteo98 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 Yes, its sick when many people are seriously injured. I just meant that the picture looks cool with all of the people in the air. Besides it looks good on those bikers they break all the rules on the road anyways. There just like the people walking in Toronto with the attitude "You hit me and I'm suing you" A lot of those people are just ignorant, and I hate that.Edit: I realize the driver was drunk. Di Matteo98 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 You do realize it was a sanctioned "race". These bikers were not breaking any traffic laws, they were out there for the love of their sport.Yes I do realize that but I was just comparing them to the people in Toronto and every where else where these bikers and pedestrians think they own the road, so this might be a message to be more carefully and don't be an Ass just because you're on a bike or walking. fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 Ever had a cyclist that was using the pavement and demanded the right of way over a pedestrian? Happened to me many times, where people on their racing bikes, curse and swear at me for being in the way. Its a freakin pavement!Whenever that happens now, I would just stay in the way. Also I've had the bad experiences of skating along the boardwalk with my wife (she's a beginner) and we had this bunch of speedskaters tell us to move out of the way so they could pass. The first few times we let them pass, but when they dont even give a word of thanks, I simply ignore them from then on.
forbs02 20 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 My favorite is when the chubby Lance Armstrong wannabees pour themselves into their spandex and racing tops... those folks dropped some coin on those bicylces but will probably give it up after a year or two. They always travel in packs.Yesterday on a trail that runs through the city I saw a group of people all decked out in spandex and the race tops but they were on rollerblades. It looked like only two of them knew what they were doing. I can jog faster than they were skating. It was a good thing they were wearing performance apparel to cut down the wind resistance
