RBK 5K shinguards

Recommended Posts

I am looking to purchase a pair of 5K shinguards but am not sure what size to get. I am 5'5 and currently using some old 14" Bauers but wasn't sure if the RBK's ran differently. Also is the calf wrap removable/adjustable on these? I am looking to get these pads because I read that they work well for people with large calfs. Should I go with 14" or down to a 13.5"? I wear my shinguards inside my skate.

Howdy,

If you are going to a brick and mortar store (in person), take your old shins with you to measure. I'd even say if you wanted to be really sure, to bring in one skate to double check. I did...and got some weird looks by some people but I knew I needed to make sure. Each manufacture has different lengths and different constructions of the lower end of the shins, so it'll be good to check. I've been looking at the 5K myself, my Jofa are falling apart, the wrap is not removable or adjustable.

Depending on how thick your calf/leg is, you may want to stick with the 14", you'll be running into JR sizing into the 13.5", and may be smaller in general.

Cheers

I just got the 5k in a 15 inch, but I wear them over my tounge. I am around about 5'10 1/2. That being said I think you should probably get the 13.5. But going to your LHS and trying them out would be your best bet.

you might run into the same problem I have with shin pads..I am 5'8" and go toungs out...but not many 14 inch shin pads fit they are too long..the problem is the 13's are way to narrow and skinny and barely fit around my calf..I have a pair of ccm 2.0's extremely cheap and were the only 14 inch ones that werent too long..if any one has advice for this problem let me know

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately there is no LHS where I am so I have to buy online. I am not to worried about the calf wrap since it can be removed as previously mentioned. What I am worried about is the 5K's being to wide at the bottom and not fitting into my skate. I am leaning towards going with the 13.5's because of this. Is there a huge difference in wideness going from the 13.5 to the 14?

I'm 5'9 with longer legs relative to my torso and I wear a 14 inch 6k over my tongue. You will run into problems if you buy a 14 and wear them under the tongue.

The calf can be removed? Whoops, I must of missed that when I was lookin at em. I wasn't too keen on the wraps, I'll check em out when I'm at the shop next.

I have a pair of the RBK 5Ks in 13.5". I'm 5'3", currently using older 13.5" Jofa 3500 shins. The RBKs are the same lengthwise, but they are more narrow than the old Jofa's so I don't use them. So, I would be cautious going down to the 13.5" size in RBK. I'm probably going to size up to the 14" RBKs just for the width - I wear my shins over my toungues anyway, so I'm hoping the the extra half-inch won't be a problem. At any rate, if you're getting them through the mail, try to get them somewhere with a good return policy.

Oops. Just saw you were worried about the 5Ks being too wide. I would give them a shot then - they are an "intermediate" size, so narrower on the bottom than in an adult size. For me they were too narrow - I have thick calves. But they should fit under your tongues.

If you want shins slimmer at the bottom try the Bauer Supreme 90/70's or the Easton S-15/9's. Also as previously mentioned go down a size if you are wearing the shins under your tongues. I wear a 15" shin pad normally but when I used to wear the shins under my tongues I found the 14" to work better as well as feeling much more comfortable. If the shin pad is too long it tends to push up the knee pad when you bend your leg as well as catching the bottom of your pant leg. Going down one size is fine as long as you are still adequately protected over the whole knee and shin area.
