How To: Dye Your Holders

Recommended Posts

LS2's have a bit more of a pitch and seem to be the most durable. As for the black holders, DO IT!! Those are hot skates.

Whiskytango19 pimped them out and displayed them either here or in the show it off thread. They look great!!

I saw them. They were my inspiration. Imitation is the sincerest form of Flattery. They are sure to get some second looks when I am done, and I am sure I will skate at least 10% better.

For your sake, and knowing the FL market, I would leave those holders as-is. The fact that holes have to be widened for LS2 and that you need 6/16" rivets that almost all shops do not stock (I have some in my garage) and that it is a composite boot and you need to press them right just smells like a recipe for disaster.

Are you saying not to take off the razor 2's and dye them, or not to replace them with LS2's?

And thanks for the heads up.

leave the steel in when you dye them...minus the hardware

Why would you leave the steel on? just take them off so the hot water doesn't weaken your steel... I took my steel off and it dyed the inside parts too so you don't miss any part of the holder.

My buddy it thinking about putting some LS2 Power holders/steel for his skates but he doesnt want them to look clear. Is there any way to dye the clear holders white? If not white will black still work for clear?

not sure if this is on topic, but has anybody purchased the custom colored tuuks or any other holders from TOTALHOCKEY.net i did a search and only came up with the fact that its basically the same process of using RIT dye. Anybody have actually pictures? curious to see what they actually look like.

Thought i'd ask.

You can't dye them at all. A guy in my shop tried to dye them black, and he said it wouldn't take. It came out like a smoky grey he said.

I ordered em way back when...before I wised up and did it myself. They use the same RIT dye procedure. Do it yourself for $5...Funny, now that after many complained to them about their misleading advertising practices, they have a little disclaimer on their website saying basically that the dye job is just a surface treatment...not dyed the whole way through.

Try removing the steel, removing the holder from the boot and painting the inside of the holder white or use chrome spray paint. Big pimpin'.

If you ordered them, would you happen to have an actual picture? From the pics on totalhockey they look really bright and sharp. But i'm skeptical that a dye job can do that. If you have pics can you post them. If not, i guess i'll just wait. Or try dying them myself. Thanks in advance.

So for those of you who have done this, have you experienced any problems with the holders after dyeing? Everyone seems to post how great they look right out of the dye tank, but we don't get any reports back after heavy use. How do they look after a season on the ice? Were there any problems with structural integrity after dyeing? Were the holders as stiff as before? If you were to buy a brand new pair of skates, would you be willing to dye them, or are you only willing to dye older skates? Has anyone broken a holder after dyeing?

I do this all the time for LAX so I'm pretty knowledgeable.

Do you work at TotalHockey?

Nah, I work with DarkStar50, but he's not the guy I was referring to.

Just another question for everyone.... would you be able to re-dye the holders a SECOND time, or would that have an adverse effect?

No the general rule of thumb is you can't die anything dark a lighter color. So if you tried to dye it dark blue and you didn't like it, the only other options would be get new holders or dye it black.

The Wife wants to know if the spaghetti pot will be permanently be damaged by the RIT dye.....anyone know?

You'd have to clean the spaghetti pot exceptionally well to use it again for food, so if you want to keep your wife happy use a bucket to dye your holders in or use a turkey aluminum pan and do it outside. ;) Stains on the kitchen counter don't go over well.... :(

Not at all. If it is metal the dye will not stick to the pot. You may need to scrub a bit with some cleaners but it will come out perfectly normal and ready to use.

dyed these without taking the holders off. I tried taping them with duct tape and then a bag over them and taping it again.. but the dye went right through the bottom of the boot. When i took the skates off, the boot was filled with dye.. but so far no visible damages. I couldnt afford to take off the holders btw.

here they are (Dark blue):

Was the blue stripe at the toe due to the dyeing without removing the blade? Either way those are to dirty. I'm jealous.

Can you use regular painters tape (masking tape) if you want to do a 2 color dye job? I've got an old pair of holders and an active imagination.

I wouldn't. Masking tape can't get air tight. Electrical tape and Duct tape are the best options.

TO ALL TWO COLOR DYERS: I would definitely take a lighter and heat up the tape before you apply it to the skate. It helps the tape get air tight and stick better. You need to take the tape residue off with GOO GONE though. It comes off perfectly and a little slippery.
