chilimax21 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2008 I'm a righty and I've got a knob taped on the top end of my stick. I hold right below the knob with my thumb, index and middle finger. So the end of my stick is in the palm of my glove and acts like a pivot. Is this OK or do most of you hold right below the knob on your sticks with your entire hand? Unorthodox is not necessarily "improper" if it works for you, then it's proper (for you). I kinda hold the end of the stick in my palm.
Aussie Joe 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2008 From all the info I've been taught (IIHF Lvl 1 + allot of other coaches) you should generally hold the knob in the palm. The other mehod draws the attention of refs (they think you are skating around; looking to butt end someone) and it also means you will lack more control holding the stick in a "shaft only" manner. Try switching and moving foward with abit of practive you'll master it.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted July 11, 2008 I know a guy that used to make his butt ends look like a ball and he finished his career with more than 1000 points in the AHL and NHL. Do what feels best for you.
w0ahitsm3 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2008 I hold the stick in a similar way. Pretty much end of the stick right at the bottom of the palm. Makes it the easiest to move it with your wrist without interference. But you really should just do whats comfortable. Nobody can exactly say its a wrong way to do something if it is working for you. Jarick 5 Report post Posted July 11, 2008 I hold the butt end in the palm as well. As a kid I grabbed the stick like a baseball bat. Maybe that's why I was awful? Anyways, I've got the thumb and first two fingers below, fourth and fifth fingers on the knob.

gxc999 7 Report post Posted July 12, 2008 I actually made myself hold a stick in the "baseball bat grip" and couldn't stick handle or really move my wrists at all. Take the suggestion of the previous poster, it works best.
