I checked the USA Hockey 2007-2009 rulebook and the official rule is the following:

All players, including goalkeepers, in the Pee Wee through Midget (including High School) and in the Girls/Women 12 & under through 19 & under age classifications are required to wear a colored (nonclear) internal mouthpiece that covers all the remaining teeth of one jaw, customarily the upper.

Adults don't have to wear mouthguards. And if they do, their mouthguards can be whatever color they want.

The revolution in mouth gear.

Manny Ramirez is loving his, as is Jason Spezza.

PPM goes farther into the science of jaw alignment with regards to balance, strength etc. You'll start to see a ton in pro and amateur sports this season - trust me.

I don't know dude. Looks like snake-oil to me... I looked at the site and saw nothing that differentiates it from other custom dentist-made mouthguards, except for the claim that it allows you to have better balance and gives you a "broader shooting range."

You sound like your just promoting them, no offence if that is your honest opinion, but seriously, do you have an affiliation with them?

How do you guys clean your mouthguards? Soak them in some kind of alcohol or something?

hydrogen peroxide

bad idea EVA will oxidize. this will break down the guard the best is to use Efferdent or retainer brite. I am employed by Gladiator mouthguards and would be happy to answer any question you have regarding mouthguards

Nah, I'm not promoting them - no offense taken. I do work as a dental sales rep, and I have been following the development of the product - it is for real. Man Ram loves them and has a few of them; he has agreed to pull it out when on base for camera close-ups (watch for that).

To answer a question another poster had - this is a specialty item where the optimal jaw position is taken in chair via a practitioner (PhD.). There is an upper and lower you can get to fit your preference (soft & rigid). Lots of the pros have been using a soft lower appliance for practice and the rigid upper for games/fights. Whatever suits their fancy.

From what I have heard, the product will remain exclusive to certain practitioners for the time being. I can only imagine once this gets a little more exposure, the PPM will expand to the mass market and we'll see the price come down.

i forgot to mention that a few of the most notables wearing the PPM in the NHL are D. McAmmond, J. Spezza. There were some others on the list that I can't remember off the top of my head....

....current list of athletes http://cincinnatipurepoweredge.com/Who_has_The_Edge.html

Sales rep for that product?

I mean most people don't say things like "The revolution in mouth gear."

It's okay if you're repping them - just don't beat around the bush.

Pure Power Edge Mouthguards are made differently for impact sports and non-impact sports.

The fee for either one is $1600.

Pure Power Mouthguard for impact sports.

Pure Power Edge for non-impart sports.

curious would you know if the pro athletes listed paid for their guards or were they sponsored for endorsement value

In a sense I am a rep, but at the same time my company carries several other lines of dentist fitted mouth guards. Just like a LHS sells various brands of skates.

I posted for the sake of informing the online community of a new product / technology.

Great question, and I can get you an answer in the coming week or two.

FTR the PPM starts in the $800 range.

I suffered from Post Concussion Syndrome for several years and there is no dollar amount (within reason) that I wouldn't have paid to avoid those symptoms - just my opinion. Especially during my important development years. I'm sure some posters here can agree.

Even one of those store bought ones would have probably helped a bit - who knows?.... Unfortunately that was at a time when very little was known about the subject and hockey players had the option to wear helmets - let alone a mouth guard.

I picked up one of the custom boil fit shock doctor mouthguards for $10. It's much better than the last cheapo, $4 mouthguard I'd picked up...

I ordered a Pro-tekt mouthguard because I think I read good things about it on here. It sounded like a good idea - you do a custom mold at home, mail it away and then get back a custom fitted high quality mouthguard. Everything was done right about the times they suggested it would take.

So I got mine back today...wow was it a piece of crap. Not only was it not slim fitting in my mouth, it was much bulkier than a $2 boil and bite. It was lopsided and I couldn't keep it in place without biting down on the thing - which then meant the hard parts of it were digging into my gums.

I was pretty po'd but I wrote the company hoping they send me a new mold. Maybe I did a bad job of creating the mold, who knows. But if I don't get a new better mouthguard from them I'll be the first person to tell people to stay away from them. I'll post an update when I get it resolved.

I am also disappointment with them, even though I have not placed my order yet. I have tried to contact them numerous time through emails and phone calls, only managed to get reply once. Not very good customer service and this is discouraging me to put an order. Seems like this is a one person operation, Canadian division.

Any other Canadian alternatives?

I received my Pro-Tekt mouthguard about 3 months ago and have been nothing but happy with its performance. While it is thicker than a standard boil and bite guard that is due to the multiple layer model that I purchased, their single layer model is as thin or thinner than a boil and bite product. As for the fit, my fits perfectly. It feels like it snaps on to my teeth and doesn't move. I literally can't get it off my teeth without grabbing the front and back of the thing and yanking it off. Sorry to hear that you've had problems with the fit, I would be willing to bet that something went wrong with the mold. I hope the company will find a way to get you a satisfactory product. Please keep us updated.

did you get Bioguard I, II or III?

Myself thinking of getting Safeguard, since I wear a cage.

I've had several dentist-made mouthguards and not all of them are equal. However, I recently (~1 yr ago) had two mouthguards made by Smartguards (website is company name dot ca). Darren, the individual who I believe basically runs the business himself, was a very nice and helpful guy. He sends out putty to make the moulds (my friend is an hygienist, so she gave me a hand, but it was pretty easy), and I received my guards fairly quickly afterwards.

I chose the colours, I was able to put my team logo on them, and my name was also embedded in the guards.

They come in different thicknesses, and I was very satisfied with mine. Darren helped with some fine tuning (insetting lower bite marks) as I think I went a bit overkill with the protection level.

I know this is my first post but I'm not affiliated with this company at all, just remember the long search I had for the perfect mouthguard.

Edited to add an "s" to the company name

I got the Bioguard II - I think the Safeguard would be a bit thinner.
