fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted August 4, 2008 played against a goalie that I know last week... I do my normal thing, when a team mate shoots, just drive to the net, but stop short of crashing into the goalie. One shot that the goalie saved, i stopped long way before I got to the goalie, but you could see the slash from the goalie coming... missed me big time, but the ref didnt call anything. Fast forward to the second period, and the goalie was in the crease, I tried to stop but got pushed into the crease by one of the defencemen, and the goalie just shouts out "come in here again and I'll kill ya!'... i shrugged that one off, and the one after that as well. After the game, I asked the referee about whether it constitutes an 'unsportmanlike conduct'. He said he agreed, but whats the point of getting someone else to serve the penalty for the goalie.... anyway we were like 8 or 9 up, so it didnt really make much difference. DavidT 11 Report post Posted August 4, 2008 We watched a game a couple of weeks ago where a player went hard to the net, pushing shoving ensues. Player that went hard to the net get slew footed during stoppage of play, returns the favor. As the players are coming to the penlty box, opposing goalie skates from the net to mid ice and jumps on the back of the oppposing player and slams him to the ice.Of course, goalie ejected; game's ended with forfeit. But I was pretty astonished for a beer league game....

It makes you look like an idiot. Basically, act like you've scored before unless you really haven't. Even still, a cheap shot in retaliation is not cool either. lotus 2 Report post Posted August 4, 2008 I know hockey players from all over the world can bitch and moan but when I reffed mens league, this one team of Russian guys were far and away the worst whiners of all time. The team was eventually banned from playing at our rinks. The director of the mens league(70+ teams across 8 divisions) decided they were not worth the trouble. C ya!!Ice House? And I have to agree, although further influence the stereotype as a result. I must say however, that some of the funniest and nicest guys I've ever played with are Russian. WhiskeyTango19 0 Report post Posted August 4, 2008 How a ref give a five minute major for highsticking when i have one hand on my stick? he made a huge mistake on that call. It doesn't bug me at all if you don''t believe me its my story so i shared it. If you don't like it, don't read what i wroteWell, if he doesn't read it first, how is he going to know he doesn't like it? As for the referee making a mistake on the call, you only need one hand on the stick to high stick someone. the guy who made the call said it was highsticking, but maybe not a major. the other ref who I knew well and refed alot of my minor hockey games told them it was an accident, and during my minor hockey career i never intentionally slashed people in the face.TWO mentions of a minor hockey career in one sentence? Sounds like someone is looking for some attention. Just for your info, it doesn't matter how many hands you have on your stick if you high stick someone it's still just that.i realize that. i am a ref myself. Let's hope that when you referee, you use better judgement than when you did when you almost kept that guy's stuff from here.
lotus 2 Report post Posted August 4, 2008 Yes, this team no longer plays at Ice House. Just curious, what is the stereotypical Russian? That they dive. I however worded it poorly in my previous statement, making it seem that I believe this to be far more true than I actually do. I simply meant to point out that this was the case in a league I played in. Albeit, not at the Ice House.
SolarWind 23 Report post Posted August 4, 2008 Yes, this team no longer plays at Ice House. Just curious, what is the stereotypical Russian? That they dive. I was holding back for a while, but why the $%ck would you say something like that?!Are you Russian yourself? Can you even say with certainty that these guys were Russians? Maybe they were Ukranians or better yet Russian speaking Jews or anything else for that matter?!this topic is turning into some racist crap - maybe you happend to run into some weird $$$ckers, but Russians are not known for being whiners, divers etc (you must be mistaken us with Crosby & his wannabies?). Historically Russian hockey was less physcal (it's supposed to be a team play after all - but hey - everybody here values coast-to-coast individual breakouts a lot more so what can you do), but we have long adjusted - after all who are the current World Champs?anyhow I can tell you that everywhere I played in North America it was local guys who whined the most even after a slightest body contact - left alone an incidental check... Granted - it was in adult rec leagues, but still - physical hockey started here, so stop whining (including whining in this thread)!
Aussie Joe 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 Diving is shit and its everywhere, no matter where you play. I have seen ever nationality under the sun dive here, Russian, Canadian, American, Vietnamese, Aussie. There is one guy in inline who gets beaten up because he dives so bad. For the record he's an Aussie. BTW: Sweden are the current world champs under the Olympics, the tournament that has credibility because every team has its best players v's the yearly worlds that just flouts the current "best available" players that aren't still making a cup run at the time of the champs. I went on to say that my previous statement was worded very poorly, and that I do not share the same opinion on the matter. I simply stated the stereotype that I hear very often, and I myself, find it to indeed be discriminatory. I'm sorry if I offended you.
