Edge Jerseys: Real Vs. Fake

Recommended Posts

this might be a dumb question, but what is the fight strap for?

The Fight Strap is a tether that is located inside of the jersey towards the lower back area. The strap is to be tied down (nowadays buttoned down) to the back of the hockey pants. Should the player's jersey come off during a fight, it will still be attached to the pants in which a referee will be able to grab on to.

I thought it was there to keep your jersey down so when somone tried to pull your jersey over your head in a fight, it stays down.

JR, is it fake based on the fact that it isnt an NHL liscened product? Obviously it isnt an edge jersey, but IMHO its alot nicer than a replica jersey, however since it isnt made of edge material, its like a stiched replica no? From what i understand fake only comes in to play because it isnt liscened.

Either way, i bought a phony, which in the end turned out to be not so dissapointing.

Fake lettering, fake logos, and not to mentioned they're making money off someone's likeness. How would you feel if people used your name to sell product and didn't pay you for it?

I'm pretty sure the fight strap is so you don't have your jersey come off easier therefore giving you an advantage in a fight because you have more ROM.

Habs21 posted the link where they come from.

Basically the way it works is that you buy a lot of jerseys from China, then you sell the lot off individually and make money. So, those selling it for $70 are making a decent profit margin.

I can tell it's fake without seeing the MeiGrey tag. the triangle behind the penguin on this one is gold not yellow. the authentics (especially the true game worn ones) had a yellow triangle:

I have one of these fakes as well. though mine has "group" spelled correctly. :)

I mean, it's pretty easy to tell which ones are fake and which ones are authentic..or real replicas....but if you don't really care, then the price is pretty damn good. A friend of mine got one off of ebay for like 22$ (Kovalev jersey) and compared to my RBK Replica jersey, it still looks good!

But yeah, lettering and fonts aren't usually exact. I saw a couple of Ovechkin jerseys that were absolutely pathetic.

You just have to be careful when buying off of ebay...if you paid 70$ for your "authentic jersey" with fight strap and "everything sewn"...you obviously bought a fake...but who really cares.

I paid 160$ for my Kovalev jersey and if I could have paid 60$ instead...I probably would have done it ;)

You know, regarding the whole fake vs legit jersey argument:

I would rather have a fake jersey with sewn twill numbers than a "legit" jersey with the screen printed twill numbers glued on. Just my .02

I hate to say it but Reebok did it to themselves. Selling an "Authentic" jersey with screen printed crap all over it for $100 makes it easy for people to buy a reasonable knock-off for $50. Not saying it's right to do, but it happens. I've got an "authentic" sitched jersey...but for the $$ I paid for it I won't wear to Hawks games.....my $50 Sharpie knock-off gets brought out when beer and nacho cheese is in the area.

Screen printed? At the very least, a sublimated twill numbers looks tons better than what's on those knockoffs.

And blaming Reebok? For what? They don't market their replicas as authentic.

Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead with a knockoff. Even a replica.

I would have to agree with you on that one JR....I wear only "real deal" but with this going on, its getting harder and harder to buy a genuine jersey! IMO.

I guess they are allowing the public to aquire a jersey without the $500 price tag?

Why does anyone need to own a player jersey? Luxury items are luxury items. Honestly if you can't afford it don't buy it or if you really want it, save.

The Canadiens link post above is somewhat dangerous, although they're educating the public on what's fake and what isn't, they're also telling the bootleggers how to make their product look more authentic.

Some of us have less dough to drop on stuff like that than others. For the amount of $$ I have to spend, a knockoff is the best I can do.

No one is forcing you to spend money on anything, you're just trying to justify a fashion purchase. Why would you spend money on someone's jersey, when that person sees absolutely nothing from the sale. In the long run, if enough people purchase the fakes, the salary cap could go down and that team can no longer afford your favorite player.

Not trying to justify anything really. Just stating reasons. I don't feel the need for justification.

Seriously? What link does jersey sales have with the salary cap?

Salary cap is based on revenues. Knock-off gear doesn't pay licensing fees. No licensing fees, no revenue. No revenue = lower salary cap. The math's not hard.

Don't get me wrong, I would PREFER an authentic jersey. I used to buy the replicas when they still had sewn-on numbers. It's only recently when they went to this screen-printed crap that I refuse to buy them anymore, and I don't have a $200+ to spend on a jersey. If Bing Lau in Thailand wants to sell me a reasonable facsimile with the features I want in the price range I can afford, so be it.

It's the same as Canal St. knock-off gucci purses and whatnot to me.

I disagree. Bootleggers don't want to spend the money to do it right; they are selling plenty of counterfeits as is.

I think the link is great, but, I also think that Reebok is their worst enemy when it comes to this.

I only noted that because a local shop here, who does an excellent job sewing authentics, had made the claim that after he posted a list of things to his site on how to identify an authentic jersey, the bootleggers started to modify their fakes to meet that criteria. He could be completely full of shit and is just a paranoid small business owner, I don't know.
