broomball

Has anyone ever played this? My buddy is trying to get me to play this winter and I don't know much about it. Any tips on playing or gear would be appreciated.

Ive never heard of broomball being used as a real sport at the rink. Everytime its done at my rink, its right after the last hockey game of the night before cleaning the ice. Pretty much just a bunch of teens screwing around hitting the ball around on some cut up ice.

I've watched them play it at my local rink.... it didn't look all that fun. I am biased in hating the sport though because last year they scheduled broomball every other week during the time open hockey was played, so we only had open hockey once every other week. ;)

this video makes it look pretty cool though!

you should play, its a lot of fun. We had it as an intramural sport in college and it as always a good night out whether I was playing or had to ref it. Most people just wore helmets, but some would sport shin and elbow pads just in case. I've seen a fair share of injuries so if you're not comfortable running on the ice, I'd suggest gearing up until your comfortable.

We also had a few 'Synergy' broomball sticks as well. We took broken synergy's and attached the broom bottoms onto the shafts.

It can be a hard transition for a hockey player to broomball. Running on ice doesn't allow you to make the cuts and turns you can on skates. You need to learn a different set of angles.

You also need to learn to run with a different stride. Learning how can be painful. Beware groin pulls.

Don't be a fool, wear full gear. The ice isn't softer because you're not wearing skates. Once you master running on ice you can slim down a bit for speed.

Thanks for the replies. If i do play I'm sure i will wear a helmet, elbow pads and whatever else would be a good idea. It is also outdoor, so it might be easier to run around than on slick indoor ice.

It's an IM sport at Michigan Tech where I go to school. We get several hundred participants. Helmet is a requirement and all other hockey gear is suggested. Shoulder pads are not allowed, however, and goalies are not allowed anything extra save a baseball glove.

It's a ton of fun, we play on outdoor rinks that are pretty small, maybe a quarter of a hockey rink, 5 on 5. It's also reffed a lot stricter than hockey.
