Open Hockey in Central MA

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I just moved up here from central NJ where the local arenas near me offered open hockey once or twice a week at late night, mostly on a friday. Now, after moving up here, I find that the major arena near me, North Eastern Sports Center offers 'Stick Time' which I guess is Open Hockey, at 12pm! 12pm! Who the hell plays open hockey at 12pm? I'm working and I guarantee that many other people are working too. I was wondering if anyone lived around here and was able to point out a few arenas that offer it at night? I am not going to skip work to play hockey, no way. And as I look on other arenas websites (the VERY few that actually have sites), I either see they don't offer it or they offer it during the day. What the hell?

Did you try the other rink in Marlboro, Navin? IIRC, they should have a 12-1 pickup. Sorry I'm not much of a help, I'm 35 minutes down the road and have my choice of 4 different pickup sessions :D

The definition of "stick time" depends on the rink. The Saturday 10-12 "stick practice" at Hockeytown in Saugus, MA has always entailed a scrimmage the times I have gone (after about 20 min of warming up the goalies and waiting for everyone to get on the ice).

In central NJ, my local rink, the open hockey consisted of 15-20 minutes of just shooting around (warmup) and then 1.5 hours of actual playing. I can't do the afternoon sessions but once every two weeks and that's not good enough for me. There's gotta be places that offer it at a reasonable time for adults. I mean it IS adult open hockey and since adults work during the day....it only makes sense.

I'd rather skate on my driveway than skate at Hockeytown.

For the OP: call around to the local rinks and ask if there are any regular pick-ups that rent the ice. The rink should be able to put you in touch with guys who rent the ice.

I've never been on the ice there, but their roller rink (upstairs) is pretty bad.... the floor gets insanely slick because of the cool air I assume? I've taken a few epic tumbles.

Wish I could be more of a help, DangerIsGo... Most places in MA that I've encountered do offer open hockey only during the day... couple places near me have it weekdays 10am-Noon, etc. In the summer time, it's just college kids skating their asses off, so a slow poke like me usually hides out on the bench.

All the stick times run around these parts are at the same time. And I think you mean the New England Sports Center

If you want want more info about pick up hockey and leagues in Mass join the Mass Skaters Yahoo group.

Buddy of mine started this after a succesful version just for goalies.

You will get posts on everything from teams looking for players for the upcoming season to pickup skates (Hour rentals) looking for players.

I have hooked up with a couple of skates through this. I recommend it highly!!!

Ok everyone, So I moved to North Reading (next to Woburn) and I was calling pretty much every rink within a 30 mile radius and (still not done calling) most of them offer it between 10 and 2 (various times between but the general consensus is that). Unacceptable. Only Hockeytown offered it between 10 and midnight on saturday evening. That works. So does anyone know places that are closer to the north? What is this mass skaters list?
