JLA Parking

Recommended Posts

The greektown garage was closed today wtf... I parked at a nearby lot for $7 and took the peoplemover. Quite impressed with the whole hockeytown experience so far but I really do miss the Sharks tank. JLA is like a hardcore hockey arena.

The arena was only abt 1/4 full but it was loud!! Is this normal?? I swear to God it was almost as loud as a full sharks tank.

Ugh, had this argument today. Only three teams in the league have original goal songs (DET/NYR/STL) Chicago I believe still has the polka but they add RnR Pt2. The rest of the league is that, Zombie Nation or Song 2. Oh and Nashville plays country.

Last year you could notice a bunch of empty seats in the lower bowl at red wings games on t.v as well. Probably due to the fact the economy is shit right now.

Attendance was considerably down at the Joe last year. It will be the same this year. Majority of the drop is due to the economy, some is due to the lockout, and others are about the post lockout style of play.

its about time they follow suit of the tigers and offer smaller game packages. You can now get 9 or 19 game packages. That should help bring some back to the Joe, but I doubt they'll be sold out for some time!

yeah it is more fun then when there are more people there. And bc of last year and the low attendance they took away the whole "hockeytown" name from detroit. Now that they won the cup though it will probably bring more fans back.

Detroit doesn't deserve the name Hockeytown. Yes the Wings are a great team, and yes we have the largest youth hockey association, but the support of other programs do not warrant the city having the name!

Bandwagontown works better imo.

every team is going to have their fair share of bandwagon-ers. Its just how it is, no matter what team or what sport it is. As soon as their team does good the become die-hard fans.

I guess the question is this; Was the name given, or self-appointed?

I recall the hooplah over being named Hockeytown in ~97, but I don't recall any "authority" doing so, IIRC it was season propaganda, but I was only 12 at the time.

The opening night is still not a sell-out...

btw where are the SRO sections?

SRO is behind the goals til about the goal line, both sides.

It's pretty bad in Detroit. Not exactly Miami/Tampa levels, but pretty bad nonetheless.

Jr, that's what I thought. To all you people saying Detroit doesn't deserve "Hockeytown"... it's not like it was a competition. Detroit wanted a good marketing scheme that wasn't on their usual "Raise your Hands!" or "Join the Red Wave!" levels. "Hey Hey Hockeytown" was golden, with a song and everything. I have a giveaway towel from the season prior, I forget what the slogan on it is, but man it's brutal.

In the Detroit area, you start to see people who have never watched a game in their life start wearing t shirtswith the red wings logo on them or in 2006 the detroit tigers. Half the pepole in my school couldnt even tell me what the players first name is thats on the back of the shirt. Its just hard to see people who think they know just as much as you do even though you've been following the sport your whole life. But yet they are the #1 fan...

I've been a die hard fan my entire life and agree that Detroit has more than its fair share of bandwagon fans. That being said they also have one of the largest out of town fan bases, some of these people are just on the bandwagon for sure but to pay money to get heckled in the Wachovia center you have to be a pretty good fan.

Best sports moment of my childhood was watching game 5 vs. the Blues in the JLA in 97, it was the same series Yzerman had the triple ot game winner. They also obviously had little Caesars pizza which totally rocked.

I distinctly remember being happy that for the first time I wouldn't get the classic Philly asshole chant for wearing a Fedorov jersey.

detroit has more hockey within 2 hours than anywhere else.

wings

griffs (ahl)

western mich (ccha)

farris state (ccha)

msu (ccha)

u of m (ccha)

bowling green (ccha)

windsor spitfires (ohl)

sarina sting (ohl)

saginaw sprit (ohl)

plymouth whalers (ohl)

port huron flags (ihl)

flint generals (ihl)

and not to mention all the high schools, ansd minor hockey programs. let's not not forget the uofm / msu sell out he jla every year as does the gli.

for me i would rather see the generals play b/c the tickets are cheaper ($19 for both of us) and my son doesn't make it through a whole game and the drive is shorter.

and yet until this year, there hadn't been Tier 2 Jr A hockey since Comp closed up shop. there is a ton of hockey around here, its just that the support for many of the teams isnt that strong. the GLI does not sell out!!! Detroit is a strong town for Hockey, but I wouldn't call it HOCKEYTOWN. and you really can't include the Canadian teams in the list. its a completely different world across the border from detroit and port huron.

No, the GLi does not sell out. And I wish Michigan Tech would make a stronger showing. I'll probably be there this year, gotta support the black and gold.

Prenny, you miss the point though. Detroit didn't win a competition like Kraft Hockeyville that is run in Canada. Mike Illitch got stoned off Little Caesar's burned spicy pepperoni and decreed Detroit to be "Hockeytown" to spur ticket sales and instill pride in the team/city/game.

Detroit deserves the name just as much as anyone else who buys the trademark and copyrights for a name.

I am quite disappointed with MI as a whole (no offence ppl, I live in MI now). Moving from CA, I was expecting people here to support hockey almost to a Canadian level.

On another note, if the Wings don't sell out, how can the ownership group keep their all-star team? The Sharks sold out almost every game and they constantly claimed that they were making losses year after year. (Crappy and cheap ownership group, obviously).
