One95 Skate

Recommended Posts

I'll forewarn those who work in hockey shops, and I may get bashed for this, but I hope you can understand my situation. I went skate shopping today with the U+ and One95 set in mind. I'm coming from 705 Grafs, which were getting more and more waterlogged, and I wanted to move onto something lighter (I hate the new Graf models). The U+ and 9k's were both too wide in the heels, and with a narrower fit, were too narrow in the forefoot...so they were scratched. I tried the One95 on and it fit great; no pressure points out of the box. I had checked the prices of these skates online to find them in the $649-699 window, but was shocked to see them at $799 (all Canadian funds). I'm a student, and even though my father has opted to pay for half, I deemed them expensive to purchase here, so I went home and ordered the same pair for $649 online.

Loyalties and/or "screwing the local hockey shop over" aside, my question is do the One95's NEED to be baked? I know the U+'s have to to get the right fit, but are the One95's in the same boat? When trying them on in the store, I had them baked, and aside from the "underwear-out-of-the-dryer feeling", there didn't seem to be that much of a difference in the fit or comfort of the boot. Can I get by by just wearing them in the house for a couple hours to break in, or do I need to have them baked to maximize the technology?

Thank you for your help.

Back to baking the skate....I would absolutely bake them. The boot is very reactive to heat. I would just spend the extra $$$ and get them done as opposed to potentially putting yourself through misery

I know they can't openly advertise the price, but I thought it was pretty common knowledge on here that one particular store sells them for $499.

That's right and you still can. $150.00 less than everybody else.

If you had decided to order them online you could have gotten them for a lot less then $649...

I checked all the Canadian online retailers, and $649 was the cheapest I could find. I live in Nova Scotia, so I wasn't dealing with duty charges by ordering through the States, and from what I've heard, many US stores don't ship to Canada anyways. I'm not upset though. After taxes and shipping, they're still cheaper than the skates were at Source for Sports before taxes ($799). Thanks for the input though. I think I'll take them down to the shop and pay the $20-30 to get them baked. Also, one final question: can you replace the tongues on the One95? I'd like to put my Graf tongues on them, but just wondering if it's impossible due to the composite nature of the skate.

It can be done.

Beautiful! Alright, to get the tongues switched over, a knowledgeable shoe shop should be able to do it, correct? I assume the procedure is not far different than replacing tongues on something like a military boot. I don't think any hockey shops around here know how to do it.

local shoe repair in your mall should be able to get it done in a reasonable amount of time, look for one that has a knowledgeable looking old guy behind the counter (wait don't they all?)

Hi

What are the official baking guidelines for the one 95 skates please? How long and what temp please?

Thanks

Simon

The box says 175 for 3 minutes. I think Source for Sports screwed mine up though. They carry the skate, so you'd think they would know how to bake it. Anyways, I said they needed to be in for only 3 minutes and they refuted with 10 because of the oven (I have no idea how that makes any difference), and now the outsole is peeling away from the boot in one area, much like the adhesive is losing it holding power, possibly from being overheated. I'm livid right now.

bring the skates back to them, ask them whats up with the problem. dont blame them, they'll probably be bitter (even if they did mess up)

but this way, they can call bauer, or give you the number to call them...bauer shouldnt have a problem fixing your skate, especially since its the top of the line $700 pair.

the only thing i can think of as to why they opted for 10 mins in the oven is if the oven were broken and would only heat up to a certain temp. but i've never had that problem at my shop and am not even sure what i would do in that situation

Either that or they put the skates in when the temperature was at 0 degrees rather than sticking them in for 3 minutes when it was preheated to 175...Lee92 do you know if the oven was already preheated when they stuck your One95's in?

The oven was preheated. The problem I see with bringing them back to Source for Sports is that I did not purchase the skates from them, rather just went there to have them molded. I don't know how serious of an issue the problem is, but I guess it won't hurt to call Bauer.
