Nike? Say what?

Recommended Posts

Ok so I know that Nike sold Bauer last year because theyre trying to get out of hockey blahh blahh blahh. But what I'm wondering is do they really wanna get out of hockey? If they do why is there a new 'Nike Hockey' commercial with Stamkos on it and why do they have Hockey training videos on their Sparq training website? Why do they have a new Youtube account called nikehockey1? Any thoughts? Does anyone else think Nike may be coming out with there own line as an independent company? Anyways, just something to think about.

I know, but how come at they end of the commercial they have JUST DO IT and then the Nike sign?

because that has been there slogan for a long time. they still make athletic wear, performance wear, etc... hockey players arent just going to stop wearing nike because its no longer a hockey company...

Also, I believe Bauer has the right to use the Nike name for up to two years. Although Bauer is a huge name in hockey, Nike is a much larger global name. Basically, to me it seems like it's for marketing purposes.

18 months after the sale, ONLY being used on any lines that are carrying over.

You guys are making a big deal out of nothing - there's nothing underlying here. The fact that it is Canada makes more sense - there are more NHL teams than NFL/NBA/MLB teams combined, therefore dominating the athlete landscape.

In addition, Nike will still be doing the uniforms for some IIHF teams (US, Canada, etc.). Also, a lot of the cross training products are marketed as training for hockey in Canada and for training for football in the US.

there are? or was that a typo and you meant to say something else? am i reading that the wrong way?

NBA has 30 teams

NFL has 32 teams

MLB has 30 teams

total that's 92 teams throughout the NBA/NFL/MLB.. and i'm assuming far more athletes use Nike products throughout these 3 leagues than they do in the NHL.

there's only 30 teams in the NHL total.

6 NHL teams in Canada

1 MLB team in Canada

1 NBA team in Canada

0 NFL teams in Canada

Steve Stamkos would have more of an advertising impact in Ontario than LaDainian Tomlinson. I'm not saying that there aren't any NFL fans in Canada, but it's a Canadian athlete.

NBA teams? Last I checked, Vancouver didn't pan out too well.

the NBA didnt pan out in Vancouver because they let Stu fucking Jackson run the team into the ground. Vancouver has a LOT of basketball fans, more than enough to support a team. But they kept making horrible decisions, one after another, and eventually the basketball fans turned elsewhere. Horrible jerseys, horrible drafting, horrible trades, horrible contracts, horrible executives...

Didn't mean to hijack the thread. but as a basketball fan living in BC..it kinda hit a button :P

When was the last time Nike had skates branded solely under their name? The reason I ask is last night I was watching the Ducks vs. Red Wings game and I could swear there was a player skating Nike skates. Sure, they could be from several years ago, but what are the chances?
