Team Canada vs Midget AAA

Recommended Posts

Tonight the Canadian womens national team was playing a top Midget AAA boys team here in Montreal, at the Ed Meagher arena, home of the Concordia Stingers.

Midget AAA ended up beating them 2-1 during, and 1-0 in a shootout.

Calibre is excellent, Hayley Wickheneiser is a terrific player and a unbelivable skater.

They will be at the 4 Nations cup that starts tuesday in Lake Placid.

Cool pics. I played against the US Olympic team two weeks ago in my league in Blaine,MN. They are the 2nd to last place team in the elite division here. An olympic team palying against ex-D2/D3 players and they are in 2nd to last place in the division

Seems like the quality of the women's game has improved quite a bit over the years. I was playing New England prep hockey back in '98 when women were first in the Olympics. The US team (they won gold that year) played exhibitions against some of the JV or Varsity "B" teams at some of the prep schools and ended up getting worked over pretty good. In fact, I remember reading a Sports Illustrated or Hockey News article that basically compared the top women's teams to Bantam AAA at the time.

The one question I have is whether this Midget team was U16 or U18? Those two years of age difference would probably be a huge difference in a game like this when it comes to physical strength and maturity. I'd be much more surprised if this was a U18 team.

I was talking to somebody that works up at the Super Rink and they mentioned that to me the other day. Is it the whole team, or just some of them?

Its 90% of the team, all of the "big names" are here from the team, as they use the Superrink Herb Brooks training area for their National Training camp.

If you're talking the Canada I'm going to say it's U18 cause well I don't think u16 exists. They played a few midget teams here in the maritimes, similar results.

That isn't 90% of the team. The Blaine group is women who are in the national program (but not necessarily on the nation team) but are out of college. They have 12 skaters and two goalies. It's not even close to being the actual olympic team. Only 9 of the players are on the 4 Nations team that is playing this week in Lake Placid.

FWIW, in the game last week, it was the U18 team playing against the top team in the division.

midget AAA in Quebec is 16u

This makes a lot more sense to me. Midget AAA is usuallt better hockey than the Prep School JV I referenced earlier. But if you're talking U16 vs prep JV, the prep kids can be 18-19 years old, which I'm sure would make a huge difference when playing women

Before the '06 olympics in Italy, the women's teams played the prep teams again, this time the varsity for westminster and some other schools. At the time westminster was a top 8 team in New England, and they got up by like 5 in the first, then pretty much sat all their good players.

I forgot about that, and I should have remembered since I'm a Westy grad.
