One95 Steel (LS 2.1 Power)

Recommended Posts

I bought a new pair of One95s from my LHS the other day and when I got home I noticed that it looked like they had taken a ton of steel off on the initial sharpening. I compared them to another guys regular LS2 steel on his XXXXs (sharpened 6 or 8 times) and the One95 steel was significantly shorter (maybe 2.5 mm) in the vertical dimension (from surface contacting ice to where steel enters the holder).

I went back and asked them about this and they told me this is normal, and the LS2.1 steel is about 2mm shorter in the vertical dimension when it comes from the factory. They claim it's to save weight. Obviously if it's actually true, it's so Bauer sells a lot more replacement steel. Is this actually true, or are they full of it and I should go back and ask them to replace the steel and not hack it to pieces this time?

You could ask to see a piece of 2.1 and 2 steel, hold them together and illustrate the point. If they match up bitch the sucker out. Do you plan on replacing steel often?

If they took THAT much off you'd probably see discoloration from overheating the steel. Someone had to have fucked the sharpening job up several times and crossground it out to do that.

When I first got my One95's I definitely noticed that the steel seemed shorter than previous LS2 steel I had seen. Initially I chalked it up to a visual illusion created by the fact that the 2.1 steel is longer than the LS2 steel. But it could very well be a bit smaller.

It helps in the transition between skates too. Believe me, going from a 288 holder to a 296, the weight of the steel made a big difference until I got used to it.

I heard the 2.1 steel grips a little better than the LS2 is that True ?

I definitely feel more grip - even though it's the same profile & hollow

I attributed that to having more steel on the ice though - not qualities of the steel itself...

2.1 is holding pretty good edge too - 2 practices & 2 games, and edges are still sharp

I even though of going shallower - and I'm currently at 5/8 already
