One95 Ankle Problems

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, I was wondering if I could get some feedback with regard to the Nike Bauer One95 Skates. I've had these skates for about 3 weeks now. They were super comfortable after I baked them, so for the first week I tried to break them in by skating with them in shinny for 5 days straight (~2hrs per session). On the fifth day I started to experience ankle pain on the outside of my right ankle at about the point where the One95 words are on the boot. The pain was unbearable as I walked with the skates from the dressing room to the ice, I had to stop and at times walk with a limp as to avoid putting pressure on my right leg. It feels as if something inside the boot is rubbing against my ankle to cause the pain as I walk. But strangely enough when I'm on the ice I feel some discomfort when I skate initially, but after awhile the pain seems to just numb away and I don't feel it anymore. I gave my ankle some days to rest and heal up and my LHS punched out the ankle to see if it would alleviate the pressure. But that didn't seemed work as now I experience more discomfort on the ice. So my LHS has now shipped my skates back to Bauer on warranty, thinking maybe there was just a defect in the boot. Has anyone else experienced the same problems I have with the One95 skates? Does anyone think this is possibly a boot problem? Or am I just simply over using the skates? I have never had any ankle problems with my previous skates.

I was also thinking that I will have to switch skates if Bauer doesn't find anything wrong with the skates and just sends them back to me. So I'm now considering the Vapor XXXX since they were the next pair of fitting skates after the One95 and because I cannot fit Grafs or CCM because of the width of my foot and such. However, I've read of another Vapor XXXX user on this forum that experienced the same type of ankle problems on I'm experiencing with my One95s.

Any feedback by members of this forum would be appreciated.

What were your previous skates? I ask to determine if fit was similar, also why did you buy new skates?

One95's are very stiff skates and for some there is a break in period - you might have overdone it playing 2 hours 5 straight days on brand new skates. I think you should rest your ankle and give them another try - I don't think there is a defect in the boot.

I have One95's and sometimes experience a pain in my inside of my ankle - The One95's have a relativley narrow ankle area.

I would be surprised if they gave you a warrentee, but I would like to know how it turns out for you.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I have never had pain or discomfort in any of my other skates (Supreme line, Graf G5, Vector 10). My skates felt fine the first few weeks, then all of a sudden just above the ankle on the outside of my leg I started to feel irritation/pain. At first it was only the left leg, then both. It went away for awhile and then came back a few weeks ago and disappeared just as quickly during my last skate a few days ago. Please keep me updated on the result of your situation.

Edit w/regards to YouTuuk's post: I don't have weak ankles, and I know this is not a result of over use, improper baking, storage, etc. It's a weird feeling, it's not irritation from the top edge of the boot, it's like there is an edge present in between the logo and lining as a result of the stitching of the one95 logo on the outside of the boot...you can't see it or feel it with your fingers though.

Before my current one95's i had a pair of XXXX's. i experienced the same feeling as you had and thats why i switched skates. THe problem was due to my bony ankles and it had pushed the inside of the skate, the lining to the outside of the boot, where there was no more padding. So my ankle was constantly rubbing on the inside of the boot, with no padding to protect it. It had become unbearable and i went to the store and bought one95's. Later that night i skated in a praco with my one95's on and there was no problem, i got the ankle punched out a little bit tho. So i had no problems with my one95's and now i'm on my second pair of 95's and still no problem. Possibly tightening them up a lil too tight on the 2nd and 3rd eyelet. Give it a try.

Hey thanks for the reply! My previous skates were a Bauer Composites size 7, then Graf Supra 705, size 7W and then Nike Apollo 6.5EE. I had a lot of foot discomfort on the side of my foot with my Grafs but didn't know why but suspected it was a potential size problem since the skates were too narrow, even punching them out didn't seem to help. So during the summer, I didn't want to spend too much money on new skates, so I bought a pair of Nike Apollo in a 6.5EE so see if it fixed my problems and it did. Then just 3 weeks ago I went in to a reputable local hockey repair shop just to see if they could make my Grafs usable without the foot pain. I was resized to see if the Graf's were the proper size. To my displeasure they were not and neither were my Nike Apollo's since now it looked like I fit a 5.5EE skate (I wear a shoe size of 7.5-8). I was pretty annoyed with this new found information, and wanted to get a proper fitting skate so went to the LHS and looked for a new pair of skates that fit comfortably. This was where I found the One95 and Vapor XXXX to fit comfortably, but the One95 to be the most comfortable fit.

At the moment, I don't have my One95 since it's sent out for warranty, but I'll let you know how that turns out.

I am curious to the durability of the One95's and you say your on your second pair already - How long did you have your first pair?and please tell your avg hockey play per week - that gives us good idea of durabiltiy.

Also to original poster - we need to realize also that One95's come with LS2.1 steel which is slightly longer than steel in XXXX's and XXV's - this change in steel could possible change your stride causing some movement of foot in the boot, maybe a long shot but I thought I would just mention it.

So i had no problems with my one95's and now i'm on my second pair of 95's and still no problem.

I tried loosening the top 2nd and 3rd eyelet, it didn't put as much pressure but the increased mobility in the ankle made it just rub more and move the pain back and forth more. It was weird the I noticed this pain after the one session I skated with the top eyelet undone just to test if it was more comfortable because of the posts I read of others saying how much more comfortable that was.

So, a switch to the XXXX is probably not a good idea?

NTKT10: You explained it exactly! So I'm not alone in this, here I thought it was my foot balance, but by the sounds of things it may not be.

YouTuuk: Yeah I considered the longer 2.1 steel and the change in my stride as a possible explanation too. But, I forgot to mention that after this pain I got my One95's profiled and rested my ankle for a couple days. But still the same discomfort.

I forgot to mention though, the LHS did give me a piece of foam to shove in the ankle area where I felt the discomfort, so when I went for my next skates, the pain went away and the skates were very comfortable. It just sucked that I had to rig the skates to be comfortable, so that's why I wonder if it's a fit issue as well and now considering other skates in case it is a fit issue and not boot.

Thanks for your feedback!

I had an issue like this as well but my problem may be different. I had skated in a pair of CCM Vectors for a year without any problems. Then one night while skating, I experience this sharp pain above the outside of my right ankle. The area above my ankle where the discomfort was had become red and raised some. The next time I skated, the discomfort was there still.

This continued on for a while and came to a point where I couldn't skate very long becuase of the pain. It turned out to be the top of the outside of my boot rubbing against the area above my ankle bone. I apparently wasn't tying my skates tight enough (I have skinny legs) and the top of the boot dug into my leg.

Now, I make sure to tie my skates tight and also I skate with my shins over the tongues of my skates.... I've found this to help a bit with my issue.

Where are your ankle bones in correlation with the boot? If your ankle bones aren't in the right spot, then the skate will never work for you.

My ankle bone seems to fit in the center of the indentation area for the ankle and it feels as if it's the top of the indentation area of the outside right ankle that is rubbing which seems to correlate to the One95 logo on the outside of the boot. I think the foam there might be too stiff or something so the rubbing is causing more pain than it should. What is strange about this is I have no marks on my ankle but when I push firmly on my ankle with my finger where the skate's are causing the pain/discomfort, I can feel the pain. I normally skate with my tongue underneath my shin pads too, but I even tried to skate with the tongue out and still no change.

I completely agree with you, that's why I'm considering a change in skates to make sure everything is properly fitting even though I thought these One95's were the perfect fit.

Could be that they just don't work for you. In that case, if Bauer is going to warranty them, the shop can either get a credit from them, or get the new skates, and issue you a credit towards whatever skates you switch to.

It sounds like a strange issue - the ONE95 logo shouldn't affect the padding as it is sewn on the quarters.

From what I hear - the One95 is extremley moldable and plyable....I have taken a heat gun to my One95's on occasion to rid myself of "hot spots" and such.....but one time I took out the insole and I melted those plastic caps that fit in the sole were you screw the blade in......I wonder where you can get more of those?

YouTuuk: I might give the heat gun thing try as a last resort if there is nothing wrong with my boot and I'm experiencing the same "hot spot" with the ankle. However, I'm hesitant as I don't want to accidentally melt something or wreck the boot.

Dip N Dangles27: I'll give that fourth eyelet thing a try when i get back my skates and I'm getting the same discomfort.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and suggestions, I'll let you know what happens with the warranty situation.

Yea be careful, best to buy a Oven Thermometer from Home Depot and use a Blow Hair dryer and keep temp around 175. Heat Gun rises temp too fast and I was distracted and melted those plastic inserts - no biggie though.

One95's have unreal durability don't get me wrong. I had my first pair for about seven-eight months, then i got my second pair just recently. I play on average 2-3 games a week, with praco I'm going everyday for about 1.5 hours. Being a center man, skates get beat up more than any other position, whether its taking a face off or battling in the d zone your always getting people stepping on your skates, for example i have to change my laces every second game so they don't break. The one95's have a lot more ankle padding than any other skate i tried on, xxxx's might have the least amount. Don't go to XXXX's. What i've done this season is leave the 4th eyelet undone, the one before the three vertical eyelets, its worked for me, so i don't know. Stay with the one95's man, unreal skates. Get the white custom tounges on them too. Help you dangle and snipe bar down.

I had similar issues with the Vapor XXV.

As it turned out they didn't fit my feet at all. My inside ankle was not in the ankle pocket properly while my outer ankle was.

I had to go through several different skates before i settled on Supreme Comp.

I also can not wear a boot with a stiff composite outer material. I have bony ankles that do not feel good in those types.

So the Comps (which have the nylon outer of the One55) feel good for me.

Just scanning through, but I was wondering if you wear socks with your skates?

I had a similar issue with my custom skates and it got really BAD. After getting rid of the socks I realized that the skates were so "custom" that the socks were causing the irritation that were leaving my ankle bones a mess.

Just a thought, but once any of the swelling subsides try w/o socks.

Let me know how it goes.

My ankle is in fact boney, but it does appear to fit in the ankle pocket properly. However, for all I know it may not, hence the pain I'm experiencing there. I'm going to wait until I get my skates back from Nike Bauer (due to sending to them on warranty) and see if there are any changes. If the same ankle issue arises, then it's probably the boot. So I'll probably have to get new skates.

Thanks for the suggestion Deerok, I'll definitely give that a go when I get my skates back from Nike Bauer. I didn't know that socks could make that much of a difference.

That's funny you say that about the XXXX's having the least amount of ankle padding--that was one of the things NBH increased compared to the XXX.
