Moving To Detroit To Play ? Help

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am looking for soe help to find a good hockey team in Dtroit. I am 17 and I am looking to get a scholarship, I played in Toronto, Ontario in Canada for a Jr.A team this past year. I am moving to Detroit with family and I want to find a league where there is good hockey and a possibilaty of getting a free ride threw college. I was thinking maybe someone could explain me the difference between all the leagues in the U.S as us here in Canada we have AAA,Jr.a,Jr.B,OHL etc...

IF anyone could give me some advice or could explain to me the leagues in the U.S I would be very happy :)

thx

If you played provincial Jr. A last year I would suggest you look at the USHL and the NAHL as options. The USHL is far and away the biggest producer of players to D1 schools and th NAHL is the next level down. If you are looking to play Midget AAA, there are a number of very good Midget teams in the Detroit area (Compuware, Little Caesars, Honeybaked all come to mind). However, I would keep in mind that at this point in the year all of these teams are well along into their season and it may be tough to find a spot on one of them. As I said earlier, if you're really focused on getting a "free ride" the USHL is your best bet, but will also be the toughest nut to crack. Whichever direction you decide to go, best of luck.

they are right about the ushl and nahl routes, but that would require you to move away. you could have actually done that by now. if that's not an option your best bet is going AAA as stated. you gotta be pretty good to get a full ride scholarship for hockey. there's a lot of players and not enough schools. if you go D-3, plan on still paying tuition. another option is tier 3 jr. A in detroit. there are several teams in the detroit and michigan area. it's the CSHL. it used to be jr. b, but has just changed the name now to jr. A tier 3. i haven't seen much midget AAA hockey lately, but would put it comparable with AAA. a lot of guys go from the cshl to either ushl or nahl, as a step in progression. i do know that it's not as expensive as playing AAA from what guys have said. not knowing your ability don't know if AAA or jr. a tier 3 would be going back or forward in your progression, but those would be options for you locally in detroit. oh yeah, was gonna mention the ohl teams in detroit, but that would negate your eligibility.

If you don't want to move away from home and still play juniors, Compuware used to have a team in the NAHL, not sure if they still do and I believe I read that there was a new expansion NAHL franchise in Detroit this year - I believe it was called the Motor City something or other. The NAHL is classified as Tier 2 Jr. A in the US while, as someone said above, the USHL is Tier 1.

if your still of age to play midget major... i would look into that beacuse detroit is the captial of basically the world when it comes to aaa hockey. as far as junior leagues go. michigan has a couple teams in the NAHL and if your absolutely stuck with no where to go at all. the CSHL is not awful for a year to just focus on improving individually. obviously if you are good enough to make the USHL then i would do that. but i can't give you advice on that when i haven;t seen you play.

Your best bet would be to contact the coaches of junior teams in the NAHL and CSHL as well as Midget Major.

Try these sites:

www.nahl.com

www.cshlhockey.com

www.tier1elitehockeyleague.com (This is the AAA league, used to be called MWEHL)

From what I remember most USHL/NAHL teams post at least preliminary try-out information on their websites. Try USHL.com. Also, since you have a full season you may want to contact coaches and/or send them some game tape, if they like you they may invite you directly to the team's main try-out camp.
