When To Use Different Spacers For Visors?

Recommended Posts

I've seen two different types of spacers, the white plastic washer-like ones and the more rectangular clear ones.

I am currently using a CCM HT2 with an Oakley Pro Mod half visor and my LHS had to put the white spacers in. I just bought another Pro Mod and I am also getting a new helmet tomorrow. If the visor doesn't sit flush with the mounting holes on the helmet, I'll probably need spacers.

When would you use the washer-like ones and when would you use the rectangular ones? Thanks.

This is a pic of the rectangular clear one, just in case I did a horrible job trying to explain what they look like.

A wise man once told me that you should invariably use the spacers from the brand that makes the visor you wish to mount (the "rectangular" spacers you've described are Oakley), and I'm sure he's right.

However, I find that it's good to have several different kinds of spacers lying around so that you can ensure a perfect fit if you need to experiment with different spacing. For example, my Itech HS22 fits perfectly on my Bauer 5000 helmet with the thinner Oakley spacers, and my pro-stock Oakley visor fits perfectly on my Bauer 4000 helmet with Itech spacers.

When I first used my Itech spacers to mount the HS22 on the 5000, I had to add plastic washers to make it fit correctly - so, to me, it's important to experiment with spacers to figure out what works and be sure that you have the materials to do so.

If you couldn't tell, I've spent many a pre-game mounting my visor just the way I like it.

I'm not sure an effective strategy for deciding which spacers to buy would be reading the instructions for the spacer kit you've already bought.

I concur, id see what you can find laying around first and try out a couple configurations

i just swapped my visor to a new helmet and noticed that it had a crack near the area where the spacers are placed. it's propably from having spacers that weren't wide enough. i actually used a couple nylon washers, not spacers. on my new helmet i bought some different sized nylon spacers from home depot, in the nuts and bolts area. i took them to a bench grinder and put a slight angle on them so they are not flat. i would experiment and just make sure the spacers are not too small where they're pulling the helmet outward. i believe that is how my other helmet cracked.

The Oakley kit comes with two different spacers and a whole list of what spacers to use on what helmet and size...

Well the thing is my current Oakley visor and the one I've just bought are both used. Hence, I don't have any instructions to read nor do I have the necessary spacers that come with the visor.

This is why I prefer the Oakley visors with vents. two screws on top of the helmet, and one screw on each side to prevent the visor from coming up. No spacers...no need to crank down on the screws and crack the helmet.

Sorry I'm diggin up an old topic but I had a question concerning this matter. I have an Oakley Straight Cut and I've always hated the spacers for it when I'm mounting and I was wondering if the Itech HS22 spacers would work for the 4500? I noticed alot of players in the NHL who use Oakleys seem to have the Itech/Bauer spacers so I'm assuming so?

Edit: I realize a post above made mention of his Pro Stock Oakley fitting fine with them but I don't know if there is a difference between his and my retail model from 4 years ago.
