Different shoulder caps on pads

Recommended Posts

I want bigger shoulder caps on my shoulder pads. Have any of you added them on before?

I like my shoulder pads other than that the shoulder caps could be a little bit bigger

Why bigger? It won't make it much more protective. The shoulder caps are designed to work with the rest of the pad as a system, that pad is designed to work best with the smaller caps.

I've switched caps on shoulder pads before. All it takes is a little bit of time and some needle and thread...

If you are going to attempt it, note how your existing caps are mounted, as you may have to modify where the transplanted caps are attached.

It is possible to sew the new caps on by hand, but will likely need a pair of needle nose pliers to help push/pull the needle through the foam & fabric of the shoulder pads. In addition, have a few needles on hand because you will likely break one or two (be careful as it's is pretty easy to jab yourself because of how dense the shoulder pad material is).

When sewing the new caps on, try to pick a reference point on each side of the shoulder pad. Try to attach each cap at the same reference point so they will sit on your shoulders properly. You may have to take a few measurements or temporarily pin them on first to get the proper position.

Someone on this site recommended to me that I use an awl for sewing on my replacement shoulder caps. It worked great, and I've also been able to use it to repair other equipment as well. The one I got came with instructions for a lock stitch, too, which also came in handy because I had zero sewing experience.

Here's an awl I found after quickly googling...

Fixitbymail attached Bauer 300 shoulder caps to my Bauer 5000 gel chest protector. The finished product looks professionally done, and now I have a protective chest plate with tiny caps, something about as rare as diamonds at the retail level. :)

interesting - certainly isn't common since usually shoulder protection is usually considered more important then chest protection simply based on the frequency of shoulder related injuries comparing with chest related ones? (hence pro pads are usually tiny everywhere except shoulder caps )

may I ask why?

I put bauer 4000 shoulder caps on some older lace-up bauer shoulder pads (same as the current nike-bauer classics).

It wasnt too hard too do but it took some time... and help from my mother ;)

First i cut some collarbone protection into shape and sew it on the shoulder pads. Then installed 2 wide nylon straps on each shoulder cap and sew those on the pads.

I was pretty happy with the result, decent shoulder/collarbone padding with lightweight chest padding!

But at the beginning of this season i hurt my ribs a few times and now i use rbk 5ks..

Solar - I can't stand the lack of mobility with bigger caps, and the lack of sternum protection on the lower end pads is terrifying. I've taken a few elbows/pucks to the chest and the end result is usually not pretty.
