Shanahan to Devils

Recommended Posts

TSN.ca:

Brendan Shanahan is a New Jersey Devil -- sort of.

Sources says the unrestricted free agent winger is joining the team, but has yet to agree to terms on a contract and it isn't clear at this point when that will happen or when he will be ready to play a game with them.

But sources say Shanahan will start skating in New Jersey today and the details of him officially becoming part of the team will be worked out in the days to come. The Devils are in Los Angeles starting a six-game road trip.

Just a few of the wingers on the Devils:

Parise

Elias

Rolston

Shanahan

Langenbrunner

Gionta

That's a heck of a lineup.

I wouldn't expect too much out of Shanny. Probably good on the PP and maybe a few ES goals. As much as I love him I can't help but think he'll be a shadow of his former self after all this time off.

I don't think he fits on either of the top two lines, but then again neither does Rolston as I understand it. They may have to move Rolston to center or right wing in order to make something work. But I would expect Shanahan to be on the third line. Can't expect too much from a third line player.

shanny brings a lot of experience to the table though. He wont pile up the points, but hes a good role model for the kids. same production (if not better than their current 3rd liner) + the intangibles for cheap? good deal for the devils.

Strong presence in the locker room will be a plus. Also, the guy is awesome in the shootout. Wicked quick release wrist shot won quite a few SO for Rangers.

Shanahan got a goal just now on the power play. Saw the highlight on Versus. It was a pretty goal too.

He could very well turn out to be the best $400k any team spends this year.

If they play as well in front of Marty as they have in front of Scotty and Kevin (both of whom have done a terrific job - though one of the two has been pretty damn brilliant) they're going to be a very, very good team. That being said, and as much as it pains me to say this, I think there are at least two or three teams in the league that they would simply not be able to play with over the course of a seven-game series.

I hope I'm wrong.

I'll probably get killed for making this comment, but I'm not that concerned about getting Marty back anymore...

nah, i understand and feel the same way. I love Marty and want him in net as soon as hes good to go. But Clemmenson has proved himself very capable in net and he's got the structure around him to help him out as well.

as for Shanny coming. I 'm super happy. I think we had the leadership in place, but just the way he handles himself on and off the ice it can only help in team. oh, yeah, scoring in his 1st game back is a plus too. hell if he scores a total of 10 goals the rest of the regular season, hes a total bargain.

I watched the game last night to see Shanahan play, and I thought he looked really good last night for being 40 and not having played at all this season. You can tell he's been keeping himself in shape in his off-time. His last shift of the game was probably his best one I think.

I agree also, is it just me (i don't get chance to watch too many games) or is the offense becoming a helluva lot more exciting to watch. I also agree that Clemmenson has definitely proved himself as a starting goalie, but he won't want stay once Marty is back as he knows he can get a starting job.
