Gloves - Leather vs Nylon

Recommended Posts

I have had the same Easton Air Donzis leather gloves for the last 15 years or so and they are beyond repair at this point. I was looking to buy some new gloves and wanted to get some feedback on leather versus nylon which seems to be a popular material for gloves since the last time i bought them.

I have been wearing some Easton pro stock 4 rolls that are some form of synthetic leather. I like them, but they are a tad heavy and dry slowly.

I just replaced them with some nylon gloves of a similar persuasion. I expect lighter gloves with little or no break in period.

no quality issues going nylon? price is the same for the gloves i am looking at (RBK 9K) and my gloves have held up for the most part except the palm is detroyed and the some of the palm seems.

I used the leather Pro CCM 4rolls and they were nice, but they were 15". I switched to 14" and got the TPS R8 Pro Lites and Easton 4-rolls pro, both in 14"and in nylon or tufftek, or whatever it is called.

I like the nylon glove better. It feels lighter and they seem practically all broken in right off the bat. Not sure about durability, but I do like the look of nylon much more than leather. Protection seems comparable, Also, my hands seemed to sweat less in the nylons. It seems that (from watching games) the overwhelming majority of NHL'ers use nylon, so that must mean at least a little something.

On high end gloves there is no durability problem with the nylon used.

Cableknit seems indestructible. Tufftek doesn't seem like it would be as strong as it is but it holds up very well. Poly is just sexy.

I used to be all about nylon but I've let 5 pairs of leather gloves slip into the collection, still the majority are nylon. I'm really starting to like the combination of both.

Are the new 5k's nylon, or some kind of synthetic mix? I tried on a pair tonight but really wasn't paying attention and sort of in a hurry. They felt a little heavy, but damn if they weren't easy to handle, even right off the shelf.

I think I'm the only one who prefers leather, then. I'm on another pair of Pro Stock CCM 4-rolls in all black leather. I just don't think there's anything more classic than a leather 4-roll with a long cuff. RE: Ryan Smyth.

You're not alone, my friend.

It's a mental thing, but my gloves have to be leather.

I prefer leather too. I'm using Vapor XXV's in leather/synthetic whatever they are.

Whoo! Nice to see others in the same boat, haha. Yeah, we know that leather's heavier, soaks up our dirty palm sweat and probably smells more haggard in the long run, but it pays homage to the days when hockey gloves looked like hockey gloves and not robot hands! But AHF, you're right, it's definitely a mental thing. Leather 4-Rolls or nothing.

I prefer the leather too. I don't know why, but it just seems like if I'm paying $100+ for gloves, I want leather (even if it's synthetic). Maybe it's just a mental thing, but I feel like the leather is higher quality. Plus it looks better, and more often than not with gloves, looks are important.

-it looks better

That sums it up perfectly for me. That's exactly how I see it.

(It might not be the best way to look at it, but whatever, it's my money dammit! :P )

I'll chime in and go with nylon. I've used both, and I actually don't mind the "Robocop" material, either, but nylon works better for me. I realize that if you're dropping $100 plus, nylon seems a little flimsy, but I find that the nylon actually does a better job of withstanding abrasions, it flexes more, and I just prefer the "feel" of nylon gloves.
