Cracked CCM holder

Recommended Posts

Anyone had this happen to this extent? Don't know whether I took a puck to the holder that cracked it or if the plastic was weakened somehow when baked or if the thing had just had enough of life as a holder. Unfortunately they were bought secondhand so I think that means any warranty is out of the question. I just pray the other one doesn't go!!

You may want to look at swapping the holders for E Pro (you could keep your steel) or Tuuks. The Prolite 3 holder is kind of known for being fragile.

Did it just full-on explode while you were skating? I mean that's impressive, never seen one break in so many places.

Same thing happened to a buddy of mine when we were playing pond hockey. It looks like your holder broke in the same spot his did. He went to turn and down he went and when he went to get up his holder looked similar to yours.

Holy crap... I saw the title of the thread and expected to see the holder intact with a nasty crack in it... your stuff just flat out exploded man. I've seen a few Prolites break in the front, that's about it.

Pro lites like to break, it is just their nature. Luckily he wasn't hurt.

No I wasn't hurt thankfully. Just a friendly game of shinny when it happened.

Are we talking "like to break completely unexpectedly with no reason after a short period of use" or " like to break after being used for a reasonable amount of time"???

Basically what I'm asking is.....how likely is another one to break if I replace this one? Am I gonna end up on my ass again in my next game? Eventually I will replace both with E holders but at the moment it's not feasible.

If you're replacing the Prolite 3 with the E-Pro holder, get ready to do some drilling...

The E-Pro is my personal holder of choice, so I'll stand by the fact that I've never broken one myself, nor have I ever seen one break. I've been working in LHS pro shops for a long while, and haven't ever seen an E-Pro explode. The Prolite 3's, on the other hand... total nightmare for many more people, not just you.

Are the rivet holes not in the same position? I figured CCM would keep them the same unless they were the root of the problem.

I just noticed that the holder on the other skate is also cracked. One more skate and that would've been toast as well.

I'm just gonna send them to no icing sports to get them repaired cos there's nowhere around here to get them done and I have no riveting equipment.

No, the rivet holes don't line up... make sure your skate tech knows what he's doing if you end up making the switch, otherwise you'll end up with Swiss-cheesed outsoles and a horrible sense of balance on the ice.

The first holes on the front and the last holes on the back line up perfectly with the same size holder. Its just mostly the front needs to be drilled out. One thing i did noticed was that the E-Pro looked a hell of a lot shorter then the Prolite did. When I got my dads skates done i got them to put on a 280 instead of a 272 on both skates or w/e the CCM sizes are.. and it looked just liked before.

So did he keep the old steel or did he have to get new ones because of the size change?

I'd agree that there are a few rivet holes that DO line up at first glance, but if you choose to stick to the rivet holes used for the Prolite3 when switching to the E-Pro, the holder won't be properly aligned with the centre of the outsole. My I cracked the 272 Prolite's on my '03 Pro Tacks and made the switch to a 272 E-Pro and DID use the existing holes that lined up. Once I stepped out onto the ice, I couldn't do a proper crossover either left or right without my forefoot touching the ice...

Prolite3 is not a fragile holder at all... knew a lot of big guys using these like pigs for ages!

looking at the way it cracked either the shock was ultra violent (not sure another holder would have remained intact), either there were a defect

These look to be the last series of prolite3 though <_<

Mine are still okay but I'm not 200pound and I don't play pro puck

I am glad that the ProLites are no longer being produced. They are torsionally weaker than most holders and a quite prone to breakage. The holders are strong enough when new but weaken significantly with age. Moreso than other holders with the solid design. CCM skates have not been very popular in my area over the last 10 years so the actual number of skaters that use them here are low. With that being said I have replaced numerous ProLites with E-Pros. Most of the broken ones I have seen are not as bad as the original poster's but I have seen quite a few that are just as bad, or worse, than those. It's not a matter of if they'll break but when. Thankfully I don't have many more to replace since nearly everyone at my rink that had these has been upgraded to E-Pros.

Maybe not the case for ccm...

But in some brands (bauer, graf, ...) the europeen version of the same product has nothing to do with the american version.

Usually they give you all the craps in north america (that's why the prices are lower in US than in most european countries), we have additional features (check the international catalogues "EUROPE ONLY") , better quality/crafted products. There's no question about that :(

When I went to PureHockey last time, I saw the one75/55 (made in China) that look way better built than the one 95 (supposely made in North America) with its alive material shit that already falls apart whereas the skates are brand new B) yeah go spend your 600dollars !!

Same for U+/9k absolutly no finishing touches, very quick and dirty made look !! and they dare to sale these +500dollars

And I'm not talking about the canadian made Graf that you have... they shouldn't even put the name GRAF on it. It's a shame. Here again the funny thing is the price, you guys pay A LOT more to get MUCH less!

are the original pro lite 3s (the black or white holders w/red logo) as prone to failure as the newer models? i have seen quite a few references to being able to squeeze the front/sides together with one's fingers, and this simply isn't the case with my older (late 90s) 452 tacks.
