Clear Pro-Tec-Toe?

Recommended Posts

I've used the black stuff on many a skate toecaps, but I'm wondering if there is a clear product out there that does the same thing. I have some new 5K's and there's alot of white on the sides of them that I'd like to keep from getting ripped up from blades and such. Any Ideas?

It's been a long time since I've used that stuff but I could have sworn it was available in both black and clear. I had it on my old Bauer 2000's (maybe 15+ years ago? damn I'm old) and from what I remember it was clear b/c it was a glossier, clear looking finish than the black version which made it more of a matte black finish. But there's always the possibility they stopped producing it since so many skates these days have plastic toe caps.

A company called A&R makes both clear and black protec toe (or whatever you want to call it). Your LHS should be able to order it for you.

There is a member that applies clear all over his xxxx's, I think it's MLSman. If I remember correctly it works great but comes out a bit yellower than clear.

Saw the A&R stuff today and it is indeed yellow. Not sure if it dries clear which is what I'd want. I've tried to search for the thread you are talking about but was unsuccessful. Any help?

Then just add matching yellow laces and you're good to go!

I used to put regular polyurethane varnish on the toecaps of my Kevlar Tacks. It would yellow but the Kevlar was already yellow. Today, they make water based polyurethane varnish that doesn't yellow. Just a suggestion. Varathane

Put masking tape over the white spots while you do it.

But that would keep the Pro-Tec from covering the white spots, which is what the OP wants.

Nevermind - I misunderstood what he wanted to do. I thought he just wanted to make sure he didn't get black on the white spots.

I can 100% confirm that there is clear pro-tec-toe. I used it back growing up, then all through college. My last pair of 7000s in college, I put quite a thick bit of several coats being super careful. It definitely ended up having that yellowish-green hue to it when I was done. I liked it, but again, I wasn't doing it for looks (old-school, traditional guy here).

It was funny because when I first started seeing the plastic toes, it was like, why didn't they do that sooner?! Probably got the idea after seeing the white plastic showing out of a skate whose toe was all blown out! HA

I can try to snap some pictures tonight if it would be of benefit?

That's right!

I do use it quite a bit. There are a few companies that make it. The best by far is the the Pro-Guard brand clear skate protector. The AL21 stuff is not as durable, and tends to crack and chip easier than the pro guard.

As far as yellowing...yes over time the clear starts to turn a yellowish color...or more than a few applications will start to turn yellow (basically after 2 coats). Applying it on the nylon of the 5K quarters will adhere well. The synthetic leather, however, will almost immediately crack and peel off after drying. If you do apply it, make sure to have a few towels and some mineral spirits handy for cleaning/touching up.
