thin vs thick socks

Recommended Posts

so today i forgot my calf socks at home and had to buy new ones. the pro shop was closing and i needed to get to practice so in a hurry i picked the first pair that had size 10-13 and they turned out to be some nikebauer socks. But these NBH sock come up to the back of my knee and are ultra thin. Now that i payed $10 for them i have to use them and i just wanted to know what will be the difference between ultra thin knee high socks and thick calf socks. from my first skate on them my arches were screaming for some reason could this be from the sock.

btw, I know its a sock and probably should be the least of my worries when it comes to equipment but to me they seem to be big factor in the way i perform and my comfort level

Thanks

The thinner the sock the better the skate will (should) feel and fit. Some people even go bare foot. Personally I like the higher socks as well because it gives me a layer between my shin guards and my skin. I dont see why your socks would give you arch pain either.

There is a difference... the thicker socks would fill out the skate more, and possibly prevent your feet from too much movement in the skates. I've had the same issues with thin socks.

Even though I've baked my skates with thin socks on, I still have the same problems of arch pains until I use thicker socks.

I used to wear real thick socks. I recently realized i was wearing a skate that was about a full size too big, which i think is why i preferred the thicker socks. Since dropping a size i feel the thin socks fit much better. I would have to think part of the thick vs thin preference is how exactly your skate fits. Also i think i remember a few weeks back Justin mentioning that skates will last much longer if you wear socks instead of barefoot.

Well, going with thick socks is going to mean less "feel" if you know what I mean.

Thin socks are probably advisable if you don't want to go barefoot.

I personally go barefoot, definitely smelly, but I have to admit that the boots, once they're a bit sweaty, feel like part of your foot. But holy crap, they can stink up an entire room, but I love it.

skated no socks today. Was pretty nice. going to find a thin moisture wick pair as I want to limit the funk.

Used to wear thick socks and it definetly used to cause me to buy skates that were to big. In some cases 1 size.

No socks.

After every game, remove the footbeds, spray down the inside of the skate with Lysol Disinfectant spray, hit the footbeds with it, and let everything air-dry.

thin under armour wicking socks

I often times have two games an hour or so apart. If necessary I can wear the same pair for both games. Unlike regular cotton socks, these socks won't rub against your feet when they are wet and give you blisters.

i didn't realize so many people wear socks... maybe it's something about my locality (NJ), but i know very very few ice hockey players who wear socks at all. is this a roller thing maybe?

The thought of me not wearing socks is so gross. My feet sweat way too much.

Same. Also couldn't get used to the feel of barefeet in skates.

Thin socks ftw

I bought a set of the cheap Merrell oxysox on ebay, you get 6pr for around $25. They are very tight fitting and they have a shade more padding around the arch region. I've had them over a year now and they are holding up extremely well. They haven't lost any elasticity.
