Avery IS back on the Rangers

Recommended Posts

My "inside the Rangers" source says Avery is wearing a Ranger jersey again.

I'm done. Fuck the Rangers.

Don't worry, you won't be the only one. It will be the end of Sather, that has to be a plus at this point.

I'm wondering who they're going to move to make room for his salary. The only guys that people would take are going to be guys they should keep.

As long as the Rangers make the playoffs, Sather is staying. Prucha is likely to be gone from the roster.

If the locker room implodes and trade demands are made, especially publicly, I have to believe Sather takes the hit as well as Renney.

Avery is around $4M, they have around $1m in free space and Prucha is a $1.6M hit for the season. Still need to make a little more room just for this season, according to a couple websites but those numbers may be off enough for Prucha to be the only one to leave. It would also put them around $44M for next year for ten guys and a whole bunch of RFAs that should be getting a raise.

Wouldn't Avery's hit be $2M if he is recalled through waivers and picked up?

The Rangers need something because they look like shit. I can't even enjoy making fun of how bad they are and that pains me.

An excellent point, assuming he was picked up on recall waivers. That would be true for this year but I think they would be on the hook for the full amount after this year.

Which is too bad. Pruchs has played fairly decent when he gets the chance to play. He is the most in shape player on the team, and hasn't played since the 28th of January!

From the New York Post: "The Rangers, who have approximately $900,000 of space, would be hit with a pro-rated $625,000 cap charge on Avery. They could recoup $508,000 by waiving or trading Petr Prucha, who will be scratched tonight in New Jersey."

Prucha's best year is behind him. Great hustle but he is not strong enough to win puck possession battles on a consistent basis.

Pretty sure it's for the remainder of his contract and not just this year, which is a big reason why both teams are interested in making the deal happen.

As far as how pathetic the Rangers have been lately... I almost feel like an Islanders fan but even worse; atleast everyone knows, including their few fans, that they suck and expect to lose every game but with the Rangers it's just so disappointing since they have the talent but just can't put it all together.

I'd love to have Prucha play more, he's one of those players that gives it his all and genuinely tries to create as many chances as he can every shift he's out there, but unfortunately he can't generate much from the press box. I don't understand why Voros is getting so much playing time, he's like a taller slower less effective version of Hollweg. I'd be surprised if we even hang on to a playoff spot at the end of the season.

Join the dark side, become a Devils fan!

If this actually does happen I can't see it working out well for the Rangers. Maybe they'll get a boost right off the bat from his energy, but after a few weeks I think it will only get worse.

I'll bet someone like the Islanders or Thrashers claim him off re-entry waivers ahead of the Rangers.

I doubt the islander would. As crappy as they are, they are headed in the right direction. Shedding Guerin and Weight this march will give them some more picks. Tavares is all but locked. Bailey has been playing great, Okposo might need a year or 2, Streit has been a godsend, and DP was shutdown early and should be back 100% next season. They will be young, quick, and hopefully, willing to learn.

I was wondering the same thing. Wouldn't surprise me if a team at the bottom of the standings had a deal worked out with the Rangers for a minor prospect or pick. For all the bad press he gets I don't doubt that every management team has had serious talks about picking him up.

And Avery is booked for three more years at only $2M if they get him on re-entry. It's cheap and speeds up the rebuilding.

I don't think they have the picks/prospects to buy off everyone.

So, what would you like to bet? Both Snow and Waddell have to look at risk vs reward. Since neither the Islanders or Thrashers will make the playoffs, the risk isn't worth the reward. If either team claims Avery to try and force Sather to deal for him, Sather can say sorry, I'm not trading for him. Can't you see that playing Avery in Hartford is simply the tune-up for Broadway. The other teams know Avery will never benefit them, even if they try to use him as a bargaining piece for a draft pick. So, what are we betting for?

He's under contract for more than just this year, any teams below the Rangers that have interest in him would be picking him up for those years, not this season. It would allow them to jump start the off season rebuilding with an inexpensive pickup now and if it's an utter failure they could move him in the off season or buy him out without the circus lasting an entire year.

If you assume that he is actually going to behave, it's no bigger risk for those teams than the Rangers. In fact, I would say those teams are risking less than NY would. Of the 19 teams with fewer points than the Rangers today, I wouldn't be surprised if six of them took a chance on him in order to either make the playoffs, start rebuilding or sell more tickets.

Do you get half of all his remaining contract...or just for this season. They'd have to pay him full boat beyond this year, wouldn't they?

It seems to be half rate for the remaining contract.

I think you guys are missing something. Avery is still the property of the Stars at this moment.

If he proves he can play without poisoning the room, you can be sure that someone will take him. The stars will be happy to just have him gone and will call him up as soon as someone promises to take him off re-entry waivers.

As if any AHL team would take on Avery in their locker room/roster just to have a free player? Why do you think Sather was in Dallas last week?

Because the Rangers played the Stars?
