How to fit skates with no LHS

Recommended Posts

I'm a lower-end player, 5'11", 210lbs. I play in a beer league about once a week during the fall, winter & spring. I've been using my first pair of skates (2000 or 2001 model Mission Amp 3's) for about 5 or 6 years. I was planning to buy new skates this summer, but then noticed last night that the blade on my right skate was broken. That, combined with the fact that there are already some pretty good clearance deals out there has me thinking that I should go ahead and buy. I'd like to keep my costs at $250US or under.

The problem is that I don't have a LHS. I live in Texas, and the closest city with any serious LHS is about 5-6 hours away.

I have no real complaint about my missions. But I'm sure that the fit within the mission line has changed over the past several years. And if I'm going to spend good money and keep the new skates for the next 5 years, I want to get it right. Aside from ordering 5 or 6 pairs of skates and shipping back the ones that don't fit well, how can I get a good fit? I thought I remembered finding a link here on MSH for someone that would size your feet & make recommendations over the internet..

Not sure this really helps, but if you have no other option, icewarehouse.com has free shipping on purchases over 99 and free return shipping on skates. At least if you have to return a few pair you aren't going to get killed on shipping.

Yep, might as well order 2 or 3 different sizes and return the ones that dont fit.

Most Bauer skates offer a "shoe size equals this in skate size", listed on the tongue label. Failing that take your insole from your skate, and have it measured at a shoe store, that will give you a fairly accurate idea. Peroni's Hockey World allows you to talk to a person live when making inquiries if you call their 800 line.

I'm not not certain, but that may have been JR that could size them....I think he requested a foot tracing.

Be very careful trying to "do it your self", I'm a size 10 in my Nike sneakers, but I just got some XXV's a year ago and I bought them in 8's! 2 full shoe sizes smaller.

The insole will contain a foot tracing, and also shows "hot spots" on the foot during stance. measuring the insole confirms the shoe size allowing the closest possible fit based on skate sizing and manufacturer recommendations.

What city in Texas? Just wondering because one of my coaches might be able to help.

That's what I was thinking of doing, but I'm leaning towards the good deals on clearance skates and most places won't take returns on clearance items. I'd have to turn around & sell them on ebay or something.. I'll check into that though..

Also, I'm not too worried about the actual size. I'm a 10.5 so I think that puts me in a 9 for most manufacturers. However, I think that one of my feet is slightly smaller than the other, so I may benefit from buying 8.5's and having one of the boots punched.

I'm more concerned with deep/shallow, narrow/wide type issues. I don't know if I'm out of the ordinary in any of those areas. My current Missions usually fit pretty good, but I'll occasionally get numb toes or a crampy instep. Nothing consistent though. It probably has more to do with the skates being a little old & me being inconsistent/bad with my lacing.

i would ask the guys that you skate with if you can try any of thier skates on to get a length idea on whatever brand. and then go by your foot type and th general talk on here to get a good idea on what skate would fit and buy away. i think it should work out that way. but ya. were in texas re you? im in the dfw and could maybe help get someout to you or somehing if i could

take your socks off stand and look at your foot in a mirror.

Do you have an arch or not. Having no arch I cant wear Bauersas they cause cramping, Missions willl after a while wearing them eastons also. certain models of grafs are nice.

I would really look at figuring out your arch situation. most skates can be baked and punched to solve those issues but arch issues seem harder to get around. A boot you been skating on for that long should not cause cramping. As others have said a shop is really your best bet to do it once and get it right. Just make sure they care most brands make a roady out of it. I thought Cali was big. 5 hours to a decent shop? Fug that.

Here's an idea.. I'm probably going to be traveling to New Jersey in the next 4-6 weeks for work. I'll probably go across to NYC just to see the sights since I've never been up that way. At the very least, I figure I could find a decent LHS up there. Any recommendations?

The only problem is that I'll have to stick it out with my current skates for most of the rest of my beer league session. Hopefully I can get my busted blade repaired by our minor league team's equipment guy. I really, really didn't feel comfortable playing a game on that..

ice house in hackensack isn't a bad idea, but their stock can be kinda sketchy. here's a few other options also although a bit further away from nyc:

-non-stop hockey in cedar grove nonstophockey.com

-ice vault in wayne icevault.com

1) i believe icewarehouse.com as gained a great reputation of skate returns for wrong sizes and stuff, a lot of people have recommended that option for internet purchases

2) without any options do your best using the general 1.5 rule. even though i dont see how the hell that worked out considering im a size 12 shoe and ended up getting 11E mission inline and 11D bauer ice... hm?

3) Looking for people who own certain skatesd around you, if you're LUCKY they may have your size to try... might not help much though...

Yeah Mission might be .5 or 1 size lower than your shoe, at least in my experience...

Well, I sorta found a replacement blade for my games this week. It fits in my skate, but the radius is much flatter than my old one, so I'll be skating in circles tonight..

I also found a guy with some barely used CCM 1152's from a few years ago. They're 8.5, so I'm thinking that they're a touch too small but I'm going to give them a test fit & see what I think. If they're close, I can probably get them punched out a bit..

But according to Mission your shoe size should translate directly to your skate size. Just for anyone wondering.

I would say in the past that was true but not the later models.

Old missions I couldnt wear a 8. 8.5 or 9 was needed.

my xp95 are a 8 and a touch roomy. So if your talking old amps and flys I would say true to shoe. Newer ones .5 size smaller.

Those tacks will fit 1.5 sizes smaller to possibly 2 sizes smaller if you want it really tight. Boot is going to be wider then your missions
