eric42434224 1 Report post Posted February 14, 2009 This is an update from an injury I got described in this thread:http://www.modsquadhockey.com/forums/index...showtopic=44766Not sure why that thread was closed, soo here is an update:I just got out of the hospital yesterday!I went to a doctor like everyone said I should 10 days after I was injured. Of course you were all correct (no need to berate me further), and went that very day. He cleaned it up, gave me a tetanus shot, and anti-biotics. After 10 days it actually looked worse. It was all swollen under the wound, and after pressing on it, it squirted fluid 3 feet in the air. Then it leaked profusely the whole night. Obviously I went back to the doctor first thing the next morning. He looked at it and told me to go to the ER immediately. The antibiotics obviously werent working. That was Tuesday morning at 8:30 am.I get to the ER, and they say I am not going anywhere. I get admitted, get cultures done, get an MRI, and IV antibiotics. The MRI shows ulcers and infections all the way to the bone....but not IN the bone. The orthopedic surgeon says no action from him is necesary. The wound care specialists ends up doing surgery to open it back up and drain the ulcers and clean it all up. After 4 days in the hospital, they feel it looks good enough to send me home. The gave me specific antibiotics to fight the infections found in the cultures.Crazy how something I thought was so innocent ended up being so serious.Lesson most assuredely learned. eric42434224 1 Report post Posted February 14, 2009 Did the word "amputation" ever actually come up?Bloody terrifying...No, but they did say if the infection got into bone, it would be a six to eight week treatment process.

eric42434224 1 Report post Posted February 16, 2009 may want to make sure the internal has healed as well.... Jeez man, what possessed you to wait that long before getting medical attention?Good recovery mate! Thanks! When in the hosptial they did some surgery on it (they meaning an Infectios Disease Specialist, and a Wound Care Specialist). I also have special bandages with silver (I think) in them to draw out infections. To be honest, I didnt really think it was worth going to the doctor about. I have what seemed to be far worse injuries that worked themselves out. I disinfected it when I got home, but the damage (infection) had already been done. The Doctor said I would have ended up in the ER regardless because it was a nasty case of staph, and something else, which would have not been cured with the anti-biotics I would have been given. The ER visit and hospital stay would have been hard to avoid...it only would have happened 10 days earlier.I have a follow up appt in a week. Will update then. fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted February 16, 2009 haha... I know how you feel. Am from the stubborn mould of 'it will heal by itself'... unless my wife nags me to see the doctor.anyway, best of luck... keep us posted. I, would like to know what could have been done to prevent that from happening.
AnthonyJTa 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2009 Well, luckily you got everything taken care of... I've been rather foolish myself in the past and have learned my lesson. It doesn't sound as bad as it was, but I had a gnarly infected ingrown toenail on my big toe, and had to have the entire nail removed, and needed a bone graft to rid a minor bone infection. They had told me if it had gotten worse, I would have lost a piggy. One wouldn't think an infected toe would hurt soooooo bad, but it was brutal.

Open wounds in hockey equipment have the potential to be very dangerous.

I actually air out and fan dry my equipment after every skate, and wash it all three to four times a year....it has practically no smell...and it will still have tons of bacteria. Just goes to show you that stuff is a danger that most dont even know about. Lesson learned here, believe me. After almost 5 weeks, it still ahsnt healed totally. it is still an open hole with some infection lef, but it has come a long way. I should be back on the ice in a week and a half.....just in time for the playoffs. And thanks for the well wishes!
