ncaa helmets/cages?

Recommended Posts

I play in a league that let's us use half-shields if we want to, but I am about to joing another league that requires full-face protection. I bought a ccm 1095 a couple years ago along with the cage it came with. I really didn't like the combo at all, and quickly went to half-shield which works great on the 1095. I want to get the most effective helmet/cage combo for the new full-face league. Since the highest level of hockey that requires full-face is ncaa d1, I figure that is a good place to take a cue from as to what works. They all seem to wear Nike Bauer 5500? Can anyone confirm this? And if so is it with the stock cage that comes with it? Or is it modified with some other cage?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

most wcha teams wear the 4500 w/ an itech cage

yeah same observation here, almost no one from Wisconsin, Minnesota, UND, Denver, CC, etc have worn anything but the itech visor-cages in 5 years of watching them; personally I have no idea why, I dont get them at all.

I just switched from a half visor to 9500 cage, had 0 problems converting. It's a good thing I switched to cause I face planted on the way to the face-off circle after a change. Only thing I hurt was my pride thanks to my cage.

Bauer 9500 and Jofa/CCM 480 always are mentioned as the most popular when this subject comes up.

I'd suggest the Bauer 8500 or 9500 as I believe they have the most field of vision. And the cages are not noticeable once you start playing.

Not sure, but it could be the endorsement deal that is in place with those teams.

I'd imagine so probably but still 95% of the team wearing the same spaceman visor cage... they must have a reason besides sponsorship because a few slip by with regular cages. I just don't see why.

It's not an endorsement deal, it's personal preference. A lot of guys just prefer the fishbowl.

And thats where I get lost, because I can't fathom wearing it without some other benefits offsetting it, just my personal opinion on them.

Not to mention that the fishbowl is an easier transition for some players coming out of junior where they wore half shields. They offer a similar optical experience.
