docar15 1 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 I saw a fight break out during a game couple of days ago. When one guy tried to throw a punch, second fella did an almost perfect hip throw. Gloves were off, both helmets stayed on. Only a single punch was thrown, yet they each got 5 mins. I have never seen anything like that before. Are there any specific rules on this? interpathway 9 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 I only understood half of that. But they both dropped the gloves off, they both were looking to throw punches. 5 apiece.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 Fighting rules are very vague and different refs have different standards.

chippa13 1844 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 I only understood half of that. But they both dropped the gloves off, they both were looking to throw punches. 5 apiece. Not necessarily. Some refs go by the; one punch = minor rough; two punches = double rough; more than that = fight.

A lot of refs I work with go by the "rule" that chippa mentioned. For me, it's intent and action combined. A couple light jabs isn't as bad as one haymaker. docar15 1 Report post Posted March 5, 2009 Stopping the fight when one person goes down is an unwritten rule then, more like hockey code of conduct? Unless of course they turtle, then you should be able to casually kick them for about 5 minutes or so.

I know a few who refuse to do anything until both guys stop throwing punches, but that is not what USA Hockey teaches.
cityofwalrus 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2009 I don't know most refs go by whatever they want apparently because I was a in a "fight" we stood talking pretty much just lame jawing then we both got 5mins and game misconducts for fighting.. which definitely wasn't a fight. Oh and we both got game suspensions..

My standard in men's leagues was always; if your gloves hit the ice then your gone, punches thrown or not.

Buddy 7 Report post Posted March 6, 2009 First what rule book are you playing under? USA, USA Junior, NCAA, Pro etc.....Fighting definitions have a wide range of latitude for various instances. Technically one punch can be considered a fight. There are also intigator and aggressor penalties to take into account.
