RecLeagueHero 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 I've been on a few different teams, with a few different policies on this issue. I'm just curious what other peoples general experiences with this subject is? My opinion, for what it's worth, is that I don't really see a problem with giving newer goalies discounts, or even cutting the fee for a winter and summer season, to help them cover the cost of the gear. After that I think they should pay half of what everyone else does because they have show up to every game, or find their own replacement. Not real thrilled with the idea of the goalie playing for free on a permanent basis.
vinceyuen 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 My goalie doesn't pay because his equipment costs so much money already.
Bravada 442 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 My goalie always pays half but he and I split any money that is paid by subs until we've both ended up playing for free. We've never had that many paying subs to play for free but we have played pretty cheap for a season or two before
rebel96 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 Our goalies pay for trainings games etc., but get pick-up for free. Funnily enough, as someone mentioned equipment.....a few years back two friends (one of whom is a goalie) and I calculated how much money we'd all spent on hockey (gear, trips away, paying for trainings etc.) since we'd started playing (about 11 years at the time). Turned out the goalie had spent way less because we needed to buy equipment more frequently. And yes, I know that depends on how long your equipment lasts. A pair of shin pads could last as long as a pair of goalie pads and there's a substantial difference in price. But a pair of player skates costs up to $600 and then there's the wear and tear on wheels, breaking sticks etc.Anyway, I always thought the goalies-play-free thing was more of an incentive to get goalies to come seen as they're so few and far between compared to players.....? Michael9 57 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 I play beer league once in a while and the leagues I play in, the goalie does pay, but I would have no problem at all if the didnt pay. If a defenceman or forward misses the game, without a replacement, not that big of a deal, if a goalie misses the game.....FUCKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!
KC83 2 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 all my beer leagues, our goalies pay... unless its a sub... then the sub goalie and the original goalie work it out themselves
reyno2ac 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 The goalie doesn't pay for drop in here, although I wish they would hold a deposit that guaranteed the goalie would stay for the entire drop in session because they are ALWAYS leaving early. But for the Adult league they get a discounted price.
armada 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 Goalies play for free in pick-up and just pay league fees for league play. Works out good since, some of the goalies wouldn't be showing up because they can't afford to pay more then once a week.
njd07 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 yes... I find if the goalie doesnt pay the team league fee, they end up not caring as much or even not showing up or making excuses they cannot play. now if he is paying he will think twice before doing this. interpathway 9 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 Pay league, free pick-up. I think that's pretty much the standard.
RecLeagueHero 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 Yeah, to be more clear I meant paying for league play. Free pick is standard just to get them out and I have no qualms with that. Seems like there's a glut of goalies in my beer league that seem to think playing league for free is standard and expect it.
raygunpk 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 Goalie plays for free on our team. Still gets beer duty though!
Darkbyte 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 They play for free (inline and ice), pickup, trainings, league. They do pay the team membership fee (for insurance and national skating body membership). It wasnt always the case, thankfully it is now (and there are more goalies these days to show for it). At $10 a pop it ads up very quickly
iceholes 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 Goalie pays league fees... free for drop ins...I dont care if his equipment cost $$$$. He chose the position and he doesnt buy new gear every year. Pay your way, tell me when you will miss... I'll get the sub. Our goalie has played 14 of 18... line of subs for goalies is long....in our league anyhow... Roach 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2009 Free all the way (drop-in and league play) over here but that's also because of the situation that exists here with the minute number of ice hockey players in this part of the world.

Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted March 16, 2009 I've never paid to play as a sub or in pick-up.Always paid to play in leagues & tournaments, with one exception where a team wanted me to take a guy's place in a tourney at the last minute and paid for everything: fees, transport, hotel, food & booze all weekend. That was lovely, but totally beyond the call of duty.I have, however, noticed that there are many goalies who aren't asked to pay to play on their teams. When I've asked them, they all the same thing: "When money came up, nobody asked me; when I asked how much, they said nothing." They certainly aren't the best goalies, but they are generally the nicest ones.

shank 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2009 Our goalies do not pay league fees. It has nothing to do with the cost of their equipment. That's interesting! We do not charge goalies because it's a privilege to have a good goalie that shows up or makes arrangements for a replacement.
Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted March 16, 2009 Just FYI, the cost difference between player and goalie gear is enormous. Price it out some time for fun, and you'll understand why the economic argument makes some sense. Basic differences: sub shins for goalie pads, helmet for mask, gloves for blocker & trapper, shoulders for C/A... you get the picture, and it's not insignificant. We're talking 300% to 2000% differences in cost to equipment the same body parts for the same sport. Sure, you can cheap out, but if you go head-to-toe in Bauer Vapor gear in both positions (which you can do, BTW, since Pro's Choice mades the Vapor mask, or go with an 960), you're looking at a good bit of money as a player and a rather huge investment as a goalie for the same lineup. ExitTwoEighty 7 Report post Posted March 16, 2009 Goalies play pickup and league for free here. Goalie gear has a huge up front cost but it feels like being a player costs more in the long run.I play3 nights a week = 600ish every 3 months. Buy gear more frequent and etc.
