MR MIZUN0 0 Report post Posted April 5, 2009 After leaving the game for about 3 years, I came back. I left beacause I thought I was too small, but know I realize it does not matter how big you are, especially with the new USA hockey style of play. I play with my dad in a pickup game every sunday, there are some good players there, so I am able to test myself. Since there really are no leagues now, how should I prepare myself for the tryouts next year?

greech 4 Report post Posted April 6, 2009 Sounds like they're for next year, mxi. But anyways, where you playing? No summer leagues is rough, playing in the fall is huge. If its anything like here, pick-up will only help you get in shape. Playing with the kids on the team is a big thing too, really helps you see what you need to improve and what not. MR MIZUN0 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2009 Western New York, I really just want to play pickup in the summer, I have a full time job, but when summer ends, hockey will go into full gear. I watched my school team play, and I felt I was a smarter hockey player than most, but in the skill dept. I was would be on the mid-low end.
Ital79 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2009 Power skating clinics is going to be your best bet to get your level of play up to where you have a chance of getting on the team. Ice time helps, as does shooting/passing/etc., but it all comes down to skating. If you're fast and reasonably conditioned - you'll make the team before the goon w/a 90mph shot does. beerleaguecaptain 999 Report post Posted April 6, 2009 Off ice training is key. You need to run and work on flexibility and strength. I HIGHLY suggest a good camp too. They will really help your skating and skill set. There are many short camp programs that are wonderful. Some local rinks may also run less intesive camps (a couple of hours in the afternoon each day for a week or so) where you can stay at home.

I would find that out and do that to your fullest extent, and then maybe some. Also, there is no better way to become a better hockey player than to actually play hockey. So find a rink within a reasonable distance and try to get on the ice as much as you can. Good luck!
MR MIZUN0 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2009 A good friend of mine who is on the team does not work out during the summer, he just plays soccer, which is alot of cardio thogugh. He was recently looked at out by the coach of a local team: junior b/c, and I played with about 5-10 kids that are on the junior c team, so if I played with kids that he is the same caliber of, I feel that I would have a good chance to make it. As far as workouts go, I will def. give them a try.
epstud74 24 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 The best HS players play year around. Elite leagues in fall and summer...Dry land and other leagues in spring etc..
chippa13 1844 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 Not all of them, not by a longshot. Most of the best hockey players won't touch ice for about 2-3 months out of the year and will stay in shape with workouts and/or sports that are not hockey.
epstud74 24 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 You'd be surprised at the number of HS kids playing the game 12 months a year in some form or another. Summer and fall leagues are when a lot of these kids pick up their game. Most rinks are now open 12 months a year as well..
chippa13 1844 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 I'm well aware of year-round hockey. I'm also aware that many of the top kids in these parts take the summer off when it comes to hockey.
Ahriman 1 Report post Posted April 11, 2009 At our high school ice hockey covered 3/4 of the year; then lacrosse started and half the team played that through to summer. It worked well enough to keep them in shape and develop in ways outside of skating.
